My lovely '89 F-250 supercab was involved in an accident and depending how the quotes shake out I may be looking to replace the cab. Any of you Ford guru's tell me what year of cab is compatible with mine?
80-86 cabs have the seat belt retractor up by your head, while 1987-1997 have it by the floor.
1980-86 cabs do not have a factory punched hole for the hydraulic clutch master.
And 1992-97 cabs, the firewall is slightly different where the brake booster and clutch master mount.
Good call on the seatbelts, I didn't even notice...
What do you mean by them not having "a factory punched hole for the hydraulic clutch master" cylinder? I have an 86 cab and chassis F-350 4x4 with the T-19 4 speed. It has a hydraulic clutch master cylinder in the same place my 89 F-250 idi 4x4 with a zf5 does.
Only reason I'm curious is that I might do a cab swap (from either a 1990 or a 1994 truck). What exactly would the difference be with regard to that master cylinder? I suppose by then I might just swap a zf5 in anyway... those 4 gears with 4.10 gears and dual wheels don't do too well on the highway...
87-91 is the only cabs that are a direct swap. The harness holes in the firewall are different between the 80-86, 87-91, and 92-97... As mentioned above, the seat belt locations are all different between the years, this matters if you plan to keep your interior panels. The mid-88+ cabs have the provision for the T-case shifter in the floorboard instead of the tranny plate.
Anyway, there is lots of little stuff that will hang you up, your best off to search for the right style cab for your swap.

Yes, I'm a day late and a dollar short...
Question: While certainly easy enough to swap out a cab, how are you going to deal with the VIN tag on the cab?
In other words, will your state DMV/ law enforcement have no issues with the new VIN number? Or, do you think they will overlook it if you change out the VIN number from new to old (which, in CA, is an absolute no-no)?

Just wondering...
As far as I know, swapping VIN tags in any state is a felony. I am doing a cab swap on my truck, and asked a police officer what I should do about the vin being wrong. He said I have to take the title for my truck, and the title from the truck that the cab came off of up to the DMV and explain the situation. He said they should be able to make me a new title with the correct information.
I have a swapped cab on my truck. I needed the original title to the original truck, and the original paperwork for the replacement cab, no copies for any of the paperwork were allowed. After many trips to the DMV and a State Patrol inspection, I was issued a "Reassembled Vehicle" title and a state issued VIN number.
