I'm new to COPs

I have never had or worked on a vehicle that used Coil-on-Plugs. When searching on rockauto.com I saw that you could purchase a COP, which consisted of the boot and a spring. Or you could purchase the coils.

What is the difference between the coil and a COP?

Okay,

I'm looking through rockauto.com again and I might have answered my own question.

The first item under ignition is COP Coil Boot. This is just part of the coil, correct? Do the boots tend to go bad quicker then the upper portion a lot faster?

The other listing is for the whole ignition coil.

Any thoughts on COPs advertised for performance?

Thanks for any input.

The boots can become brittle and crack before the COP fails. This allows moisture in and leads to bad spark.

I fixed a rough running problem on my Excursion last summer by replacing the spark plugs and installing new boots. Mine were very brittle.

Assuming you're having a miss? It's best to replace all the boots with a dab of dielectric grease (cheap) and only replace the COPs that are bad (expensive). I've replaced only 3 in the 12yrs of ownership. Don't just replace all 10.

Not having a miss yet. I have a CEL with P0720, Output Shaft Speed Sensor.

Found several threads with mention that a coil going bad can cause the P0720 CEL. Saw that ebay had 10 packs of coils for $100. Thought about changing the COPs as part of a tuneup. I would play it safe and change the Output Shaft Speed Sensor too.

Spark plugs and coil boots - change as preventative maintenance.

Coils - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
