I have a 2000 V10 with 230,000 trouble free miles. It now consumes about two quarts of oil between changes. No smoke or leaking. I still use 5-30W oil. Should I switch to a heavier weight oil? 10-30, 10-40, 5-40? Thanks in advance.
How often do you change the oil? Mine burns about 1 quart in 2000 miles. As long as it is below 1 quart every 1000 miles I would not worry about it. I am running Mobil 1 10W30 high miliage. I expect some of the oil consumption is valve stem seals.
Its proably the PVC elbow that needs to be replaced. It is a very over looked part unless you know about it. One would think what does this have to do with oil consumption. I have attached a link to read. It will explain it. Change it and you should be back in the saddle again.
Did you use a Motorcraft PCV valve? I found the aftermarket ones prone to premature failure. Mine failed within a month of replacement. Also check the hose and connections for oil.
Judging by the threads on this forum (and my experience) they fail with mileage quite often. The PCV valve is considered to be a consumable part that should be replaced as preventative maintenence. IMHO it doesn't make sense to waste time cleaning a $10-$12 part that will probably fail again. There have been threads on this forum where people have ruined engines because when the PCV valve failed, the owner didn't check their oil level often enough and the engine became oil starved. Granted the problem is the owners neglect of their truck but why chance a failure?
The problem with replaceing it is you may not get an exact replacement thanks to the Chinese one size fits all mentality. If it looks close they call it good. The flow rate through that valve is important. Too much and you suck oil into the intake or change the mixture too much. Too little and you are not keeping a vacuum in the crankcase which would cause leaks.
Perry, You make very some good points. It was for these reasons I recommended that the OP stay with a Motorcraft PVC as opposed to aftermarket. I don't know where the Motorcraft is manufactured (probably Chinese) but the quality control from Ford is better than the Bojack brand sold across the parts counters.
On an aside, I was amazed at how quickly my '99 went through oil when my PCV failed. I replaced it with an aftermarket valve from NAPA and 3 weeks later my oil loss came back. I lost 3 quarts in those 3 weeks. I used a new Motorcraft PCV valve and 8 years and 30,000 miles later it is still working fine. So, I guess I am admitting that my experience in this matter is based upon 8 year old information. YMMV
May be it went bad again its cheap enough to replace. Get a motorcraft part. check the rubber seals it plugs into as well.
Even though you replaced recently it could have been a faulty new part or it was a flook and went bad. check all the lines for the PVC maybe they have a crack and do not seal well..
