oil burning

Just a real life experience with what I thought was a bad case of oil consumption. I have an 2000 F250, V10 5spd with 51,000 miles. For the first 40,000 m I didn't use
any oil between 3000m changes. I started using more and more oil until it was up to a quart in 1,000 miles. I recently replaced the PCV valve and am back to little or no oil loss.

That reminds me, I gotta check my oil level. I've been spoiled, it never uses a drop between oil changes.

Always a good reminder to check that PCV valve. I have seen that before but it is one of those things that can slip through the cracks.

Snocat,

What brand PCV valve you used and where did you get it ?
(The OEM Motocraft seems to be Ş 20-30.00 )

Hi Wolfboro.

I went with O'Riley's Parts, it was around $4. I lucked out and do not have the heated type of PCV valve, rather the "old school" type.

Update: another 1500 miles and no oil loss.

Ok I hate to ask this cause I feel like an idiot but here goes. For about the first two years I have had the Excursion oil consumption was about 1/2 quart per oil change (3-4000 miles). I changed the plugs about two years ago and ever since oil consumption went to 1-2 quarts per oil change. Now the truck has been running fine otherwise so I just kept putting oil in her. Read this thread and thought I would change the PVC valve. Guess what, the PVC valve was just sitting on top of the valve cover not in the hole. Unless you were looking close you couldn't tell it. Any way went ahead and put the new one in. My question is would the PVC valve not being in the hole have made the oil consumption increase like that? Again not sure how long it had been out but haven't messed with anything since plug change about two years ago. Been running great. Thanks, John

I got mine from O'Reilly Auto Parts. They didn't have it in stock at the store but had it in the warehouse and had it delivered to the store in a couple of hours. Don't remember the brand but it was only $3.99.

Reps to ya snocat. My truck suddenly started burning oil last year and has steadily gotten worse. Never thought to check the PCV. Your post made me look... and sure enough it was stuck open. Oil burning no more! Thanks...!

I had the same issue with my '99. I replaced it with a NAPA PCV which worked fine for a short while (about a year). I then went back to Motorcraft and haven't hada new problem yet after 3 years. I strongly recommend using Motorcraft PCVs.
