I'm new to this forum but hopefully you guys can help me out. I have a '00 powerstroke with an automatic. I was coming down Rabbit Ears Pass the other week and when I dropped it out of OD, the RPM's dropped to an idle and I picked up speed. (glad I didnt have the 5th wheel pushing me!) Anyway, what actually causes the "engine braking"? It brakes in OD, only slightly, but when out of OD, there is nothing. I took it out for a good long test after I got back home and rolling through the hills, I could get it to brake in 3rd maybe 5% of the time, but I couldn't pin down what i was doing or wasnt doing to make it work. I use 4 different Fords at work with the same tranny and engines and they all have some braking, but I don't really know where to start. I talked with the Ford dealer and they have no idea, or at least they won't until I shell out the bucks. Any help would be greatly appreciated
The transmission has to connect the wheels to the engine for it to give a braking effect, so it's got to be a transmission malfunction. Most parts stores will pullOBD-II codes free.
Most parts stores don't have a scan tool that can read Ford transmission codes. Also, if the OD light has not been flashing there won't be codes to read.
Do you have engine braking with the shifter in "2" or "1?" yourr problem is either the coast clutch or the coast clutch solenoid. If you don't have braking with the OD cancelled, but you do when the shifter is in "2" or "1" then it's the solenoid. If it doesn't have braking in "2" or "1" then the coast clutch is bad.
