97' 460, in my F-250, gets so hot, you can't touch the return Rad. hose. But temp. gage is on the "N" in Normal at water tenp gage! Where do I start, already change the thermistat, and water pump! Help!!! And has new Radiator!
It's a 460 they run hot, the hot hoses are normal my 7.3 you can't even touch when the truck is hot. In my 70's demo cars I dry block the motors and trust me they have no problems dealing with heat. Lets put it this way I've gotten a 71 Lincoln mark 4 460 so hot you can smell and hear the oil sizzling out of the motor. Your in good shape !
I believe the 460s use a 190* or 195*F thermostat... you won't want to touch anything after the truck is up to proper operating temperature. As long as the temp is registering in the 'normal' range you are good to go. If it gets too hot the fan will kick in and it will sound like you are driving a Kenworth!
The temperature difference across the radiator is only going to be around 30*F, maybe 40*F if you have a really good, clean radiator and a perfect fan clutch.
With a ~190*F thermostat, that means you can still expect 150-160*F on the lower rad hose - which will still burn you.
If its not pushing coolant into the overflow bottle/boiling over, and the gauge reads normal - it's fine.
