Ok, I read something else on the forum that has me confused. First off 2002 F250 4x4. I recently bought it with 155,000 miles on the odometer. It is (as far as I can tell) completely stock. It had an autometer boost gage and pyrometer installed on the pillar when I bought it. Out of the hole it builds around 19 psi boost and if you stay in the throttle after the shift (stay in it for 4-5 seconds) it will build up to 24 psi. Is my gage incorrect? I recently read stock boost is 16 psi. I hardly ever run the truck that hard but if something else has failed and this high pressure indication is a warning my truck is sending me I want to know. I know the history of the truck to a point. It was a massachusetts truck for 100K miles then sold to a Marine and lived in SC and NC for the next 50K miles and 4 years. Other than that the truck and I are just starting to get to know each other.
Not many folks install gauges unless they have a chip or programmer. Do you have an aftermarket intake or exhaust? Is there anything hooked into the MAP line that might be a boost fooler?
intake looks stock, exhaust is definitely stock. I am unsure of the "map" line and a "fooler" I will have to do a little research and get back to you. There are no signs of any modifications external and no boxes hooked to the computer.
I dealt with the exact same thing last year when I bought my truck and installed gauges. I had about 20 PSI boost and found out the previous owner had left a Superchips burned onto my PCM. Now this might not be your case, but I bet it is. As F350 stated, someone could have boost fooled it to create higher boost or something too.
At that point you can leave it, go to the dealer and have it set back to stock for a couple hun, or do what I did and get a DP tuner and it completely overrides the burnt on tune on your PCM (if this is your case).
I got my DP F5 with a switcher, Stock Tune(Free), 80E, decel and 80T for about $400.
When i'm in stock I hit about 17PSI which is where stock should be without any other mods besides intake and exhaust. In 80E I push 25PSI.
If your wastegate is disconnected, that could also explain higher boost even with stock tunes. Check whether your red line is connected to the wastegate actuator. Sometimes folks disconect it and plug it to make more boost.
I bet it has a programed PCM. But your question was, will it hurt it. No. Have fun. But if you really want to have fun, buy an good custom tuner, it will fell like a much smaller
vehicle.
