Exhaust question.

After doing a lot of reading on the subject there are a lot of people who say there is no difference in a 3 1/2" and a 4" exhaust on the truck as long as you upgrade the down pipe to a 3"

With that being said I have been thinking about just getting some extra 3 1/2" pipe and gutting the cat and muffler and just having the pipe run through it. Which would give me a straight through pipe but still pass for inspection as they just glance under.

Does that sound like it would work or would I be better off stepping up to a 4" exhaust system.

Anyone have and straight sections of 3 1/2" pipe they would like to sale?

I don't know why that wouldn't work! I'm no help on the extra pipe though... If you check out Jegs online they have a pretty good selection of exhaust tubing.

Or go to a large truck parts place and just buy what length u need. My system is a new down pipe, stick of 4" straight pipe to a used dodge take off 4" tail pipe(my cummins buddy went 5").i have less than 200$ in the whole thing WITH a donated stainless polished 4"tip slash cut tip even.i hear the turbo whistle, not much more

Thats what I did .....cost me more to have someone weld a flange on the pipe than what pipe cost.....when muffler goes .....it will also be replaced with 4" the rest of the way.....

The "cat" on these trucks isn't actually a catalytic converter its a soot trap, there is nothing special in there just a honeycomb of ceramic, if you look straight at it, you can actual see right through it. Take the flange apart at the DP and pull the exhaust off the truck. Take a long pipe and bash the center out of the cat, shake the ceramic material out of it and re-install, The factory muffler is straight through already. Easiest way to retain a "factory" looking straight through exhaust.

Well I've been out of pocket the past several days but finally got under the truck and looked at it. I didn't think about it being all welded.

So I'm just going to order a 4" and cut the hole on the cat bigger and slide it over the pipe just to make it look like its there.

So there is nothing to really do about the muffler but just keep it there?

Did you have to make custom cuts and weld it all up?
