MSD Ignition vs. Motorcraft

Well, im planning on new plugs, wires, cap, rotor and coil. I was originally gonna go with all Motorcraft parts to keep it running like factory, but I have seen nothing but praise for MSD products. So thus I ask, is there really a difference between the two? Im sure there is but which would be "better" in you guys opinions?

an msd blaster coil is hotter and faster. the msd distributor cap has all brass poles inside. get resistor/spark plug wires with the lowest resistance you can find to round out the package. It's not really that much more money that the motorcraft stuff and the ignition system is one of the least expensive ways to get a bit more out of the engine. I am delighted with my msd coil, distributor cap & rotor and Mallory sidewinder wires. why not go for the good stuff if it isn't cost inhibitive?

Yes there is. The MSD coil will put out more power to give a better spark and that will allow you to gap the plugs farther giving the larger spark.
The MSD or any performance wire will have alot less resistance allowing that extra power to get to the plugs
I'm not sure of the difference on the cap/rotor tho. I'm guessing different contact material or larger area to make contact.

Damn beat me to it plane Jane lol.

Having the upgraded ignition will allow you to advance the timing to around 13.5* from the factory 10* to give a bit more oomph and a smoother idle

I was thinking MSD cap, Ford Racing 9mm wires, Motorcraft copper plugs, Motorcraft rotor(cant find MSD one?). Which would be a better coil? Blaster or streetfire?

I was thinking when I installed the new parts I would do the 6 liter tune up with bigger gap and bumped timing...

Exactly. I have the MSD cap/rotor (comes as a set IIRC), the 9mm red ford racing wires and the MSD blaster coil on my truck with standard copper plugs

I advanced it to around 14° and I have nothing but stock parts, except the coil and it's a Standard Motors stock replacement. Those parts won't make much of a difference, really.

X2 especially on a stock engine.

Run quality Motorcraft parts with brass contacts.

I cant speak definitively re: enhanced performance or not of MSD vs all motorcraft parts. I have never replaced a NEW set of motorcraft with a NEW set of MSD ignition parts and compared the resulting performance of each. I can say this though: the specs on the MSD are Better than the ford racing specs. The cost isn't significantly higher and both have a good reputation for durability. So I went with the MSD.

I went with MSD coil, wires and cap/rotor. Only complaint I have is the coil wire doesn't fit as snug on the coil as I'd like. Actually had it slip off once doing a J-turn in the Zebra.
