I was thinking when I installed the new parts I would do the 6 liter tune up with bigger gap and bumped timing...
Evan, I just did the 6 Liter tune on my 351 less than 2 weeks ago ... I went with the "Blaster" coil and my cap & rotor came from O'Reilly's for around $36 (check the rotor they like to pack the Duraspark ones and not the regular ones) and the coil was $32 I think. I had motorcraft plugs in already just checked the gap. I could use new wires, the old ones (8mm) are still on it. I went to 14* instead of 13.5 still OK My MPG test drive, same trip as last month I went from 11.7 MPG to 14.47 MPG 166 mi. back and forth over a 5,000ft hill ...some traffic and this time I ran the A/C for 3 hrs.
The only additional thing I did was ran a fine mist if water thru the throttle body at about 2800 RPM for around 10 min. (de-carboning the pistons)
About to order my new ignition components. Quick question however. I read somewhere(JEGS I think) that the plug wires could be cut down to size to fit because they were universal wires. Is this true? Summit says they are for the 5.0/5.8. Midnight, I know you are running them. Is this the case?
Im ordering a set of MSD wire seperators as well so maybe that will clean them up a little. Any chance for a picture? Im sure its already dark out so if you cant that's okay.
My Mallory sidewinder 300 ohm wires came completely cut to one length with a variety of distributor boots. I had to take off my current wires and manufacture the new ones to the length of the original wires, strip the casing, crimp on the connectors and slide the boots on. It was kind of a pain in the ****, but It was the only way to get 300 ohm wires. The 302 has 5 or 6 looms. 2 are 2 wire looms one on the pass side behind the tranny dipstick, one on the driver's side behind the engine hoist. two larger looms slide onto pins on the valve covers, and another loom floats under the throttle body assembly.
I should have stated, performance wires are universal fit, you get 8 wires with either 90 degree or 45 degree spark plug boots attached to one end. If you have a 302 you NEED the 45 degree spark plug boots, the 90 degree bring you too close to the manifold and you will heat up the boot too much. the wires are ALL way too long, they NEED to be cut to length. The other end of the wire is simply a cut wire and you need to do the work of attaching the connector and sliding the boot on. If you do not want to do this them buy a set of motorcraft that is sized specifically for your engine.
BTW: before you but 9mm wires check out the specs on the 8mm Mallory sidewinder wires, lower resistance and still fit into your factory looms. I couldn't be happier with that purchase.
"2 are 2 wire looms one on the pass side behind the tranny dipstick, one on the driver's side behind the engine hoist. two larger looms slide onto pins on the valve covers, and another loom floats under the throttle body assembly. "
That's 5.
Do you still have the factory valve covers Reaper?
Well my truck is a 351, not a 302. I know I still need the 45* boots. The Ford Racing set has them and they look like they are sized, although probably not perfectly, for the 5.0/5.8. They also appear to be pre-made. I looked at the Mallory wires and they look like a real good set. I cannot afford $75 wires. Im going to order the Ford racing ones.
