i need help with my 460. i bought it about 4 days ago, and took it fishing. when i went to start it up yestreday i heard a clank. poped the hood, got under it, ect, and found that the dampener was loose. the ring(with the timing marks) right behind the crank pulley was completely loose, to the piont where it spins freely on top of the ring under it.
i cant find bolt holes in it, and its way too loose to have been a press fit. so how would i go about fixing it? just replace it?
what caused it? how is it supposed to attach in the first place? any ideas?
if it ran like that a while, i'm worried what damage was done internally, but i'm planing a rebuild anyway. i just wanted to play with the truck a while before i had to.

Sounds like you sheared the woodruff key. That's a piece of metal that fits in a groove in the crank snount that the dampner, with a grove that fits the key, slides on the crank to keep it from rotating. The crank bolt then hold the dampner from forward motion.
ok, thanks. is the dampner hard to pull? it looks like i'll have the clearance with out pulling the radiator, but if i have to get a puller in there the radiator will have to come out.
You'll need a puller to take it off. If it comes off by hand it was way too loose anyway. You should be able to rent a puller from a local auto parts store.

ok thanks for the help.
heres what i learned: the bolt in the center of the pulley is a 9/16 and a wailing bitch. but you can lock up the fly wheel to stop the engine from turning. i also used a 48 inch pipe wrench on the smaller ring of the dampner to hold the crank(since it was coming apart, i worked it all the way apart to get the wrench on it)
o'rileys stocks the dampner for 112.00 i found it new at a mom and pop store for 80.
orileys also sells a decent puller for 17 bucks. i'm hanging on to it.
i also decided to change out the water pump since its the original one, even though the truck only has 65k miles on it(not bad for an 85, but it belonged to a local rancher and the truck never left the ranch). new hoses, belts and plugs while i was there too.
body lift (2in) is next. the truck was exposed to alot of dust and farm chemicals and i've noticed alot of the soft parts are dry rotted.
runs great though, and got it for $1950 bucks, so i'm happy.
thanks yall.

Damper is constructed of two pieces of steel "secured" together by a pressure fitted piece of rubber. Rubber goes bad, no longer secured. Outer ring has TIMING MARKS impressed into it. If it's no longer "secured", then marks are no longer accurate. So it doesn't matter if distributor was removed, what matters is:
Were TIMING MARKS still accurate last time engine was timed?
