Tried this in the transmission forum, got some replies but it strayed off topic.
Looking to swap R&P on my 96 F350 CC 4x4 460 E4OD. I will probably be in the 7-9k range weight wise and this is a 90% tow vehicle not my DD, almost all flatland as well.
So 4.56 with 285's (33")
or 4.88 with 35's ?
Will I just be defeating the purpose of the overdrive seeing how I will be turning 2,000+ RPM on OD with 4.88's.
Just looking to keep the E4OD happy and not work the heck out of the truck.
I think the 4.56 would be a good ratio with either tire diameter. In my opinion the 4.88's would be a bit too much of a good thing, so to speak. If you were going to commit to running strictly 35's they would be O.K., but very large tires don't make for great towing stability anyway. P.S. I built a couple 460's back in my motorhead days. With a little compression and some opening up of the exhaust ports (its Achilles heel) they produce serious torque. They'll pass anything but a gas station.
I agree with 4.56 gears with either tire size. The 460 is still one of the best if not the best towing gas engine Ford ever made. I have seen many of them go well over 200K miles without major problems.
