Im currently running a 352 with a .40 overbore in my 65 F100 4wd. I run it all day long in 70+ outdoor temp with a 180 degree thermostat. So far Ive seen no overheat problems. It runs right in the temp range the owners manual calls for. The motor has about 10,000 miles on the rebuild. I do run headers which may help relieve some of the heat vs the old exhaust logs.

But even then, I'd have to go to something like a 3.00:1 to compensate, and I think that would be a bit much, even with a torquey 460. Not to mention, I don't think I can even get a gear that high for a Dana 60, or similar HD axle.

That said, I'm not at all against sticking with a manual trans, and given what I'm doing with the truck, might actually be a better plan.

Welcome to my world....

The Dana 60 as far as I have been able to find has a 3.54 as the best that I can find..... the guys at Anaheim Gear, and also Curry enterprises said that I would be much happier with either 5 speed or 6 speed to get the higher ratio... they suggest the TKO 500 as the best choice. They warned that upping from a 4.10 to a 3.54 would cause a sizable drop in mileage. which is the opposite result of what we are seeking. It apparently causes more of a load in the lower gears.... I have been searching for a good TKO 500 or 600 and so far I have seen a few good deals on rebuilts..... I have also looked at the New Venture NV4500 which is supposed to be a very solid Trans, and there is a conversion kit to mate it to an FE, sold by Summit Racing. which is made by TransDapt. but it seems to me spend a bit more for the Tremec TKO, and mating Bell Housing which would cost a bit more, but it would be a much easier swap in the long run... Take that for what it is worth!

Fellas,
I must be missing the boat on this thread.

Because around these parts, to get each cylinder of engine blocks sonic-checked (to determine if your block suffered from core shift during casting, which limits the amount you can overbore it) just to determine IF you can proceed with the machining, then to refurbish the attaching parts to 'rebuilt' status, would likely cost more than a few hundred $$. Which is more than what a decent, running 460 would cost.

Unless you can find good (not needing a rebuild) OD transmissions selling for WAY less than what they are selling for around my neighborhood and then add in the associated costs to getting it installed, driveshaft, linkage, wiring or the cost of purchasing & installing a different HD rear differential.... these costs would quickly exceed what you'd simply pay in the extra gasoline (assuming your profile of logging <1K miles per year is still valid).

Yeah, your fuel mileage would not be pretty, but the costs of parts & installation are real too.

You mentioned you'd be open to the idea of going with a manual transmission. I don't know how do-able that would be as I suspect not many 460s were equipped with a manual transmission. Or, how big of a job it would be to bolt up, say, a T-18 behind a 460.

FYI-you can not use a 390 crank in a 352. The connecting rods will hit the sides of the pistons, and the motor won't even turn over! BTDT!

Edit:Actually, thinking back, I'm pretty sure it was the crank counterweights that hit the piston (this happened on an engine I built about 25 years ago so I'm a little fuzzy...) Either way, it didnt work!

Thanks for that, I thought that might be the case. With the longer stroke, it changes the angle of the connecting rods through the stroke, aka a wider swing... Thanks again..

According to Bear (in the fe forum) you can put the 390 crank and rods in a 352.But the issue is the cost of the specialty pistons that you need are pricey.I had posted this same question in the FE forum awhile back. 352 bore w/390 crank and rods would equate to a 380ci.If it was tobe done.
