What engine is in the truck now? You have quite a few options without ditching a converter. If the existing converter is in good working condition it is really not hurting your performance/mileage.
I have a custom 3" exhaust on my 1992 F350 4x4 w/5.8L engine that I pieced together using a Bassani y-pipe, Magnaflow converter, muffler then finished it off with a 3" tailpipe. Fits like the factory put it there.
Exhaust tone is very subjective. I refer to this: Exhaust sound clips - FSB Forums when the subject of mufflers and sound comes up. Tons of different combinations with sound clips.
