temp sending unit question

Slowly bringing the flathead back to life.i junked the original wiring it was a fire waiting to happen.since these
have a reputation of running hot,and this one has been
sitting 20 plus years,i need to keep check on the temp.
which side do i need to put a gauge in? Do i need to
put one on each bank? Just want to make sure the thermostats are not stuck or smething is stopped up.
thanks

James, since each side of the block is independent of each other until the water reaches the top portion of the radiator, I would recommend running a mechanical gauge of each head. That's what I've been using for years for my 46 coupe. Since this engine has been sitting for awhile, I would also recommend giving the block a good flushing out and most importantly, make sure the radiator is good and clean. I have found over the years that a clean radiator does wonders in keeping the temps down. Good luck with your project.

Steve, maybe I missed it, but I'd love to see a pic of your '46!

James, I seriously recommend taking off your water pumps, supporting the engine by the oil pan, and flushing HARD. The engines on these sit sloped to the back, and there are no drains at the back (great idea, eh?). All the rust and mud tends to collect at the back and the only way to get it out is to drop the front of the engine enough for it to slide out. Is your engine completely assembled? Front clip on?

You can do one side at a time (one pump off) and flush from the temp sender hole with a chunk of pipe and the hose clamped onto that. You don't want to build a lot of pressure!!

Amen to what Ross said . I took a ton of casting sand and rust out of my block before it went to the machine shop .

Thanks fellas.I think i like the 2 gauge idea,i am not going back 100% original anyways.I will flush the block before i get too serious. We drove 3 laps around our 2 acres tonight. My son was so excited! Dad might have been a little himself!
