I have a 99 F-350 CC LB 4x4. I am wondering if the carrier bearing bracket that wraps the rubber surround needs to be perpendicular to the drive shaft? What kind of problems can it cause if it isn't? I'm having some vibration issues that I'm trying to track down with no luck so far. I can't seem to figure out if it is the driveline or the transmission (hopefully not the later) The vibrations are only in motion and they aren't consistent. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. When it does happen it is generally in the upper gears. It will start when I press on the go pedal and stop if it down shifts or I let off the pedal. I am also getting a service engine soon light. Normally it's always on but once in a while it might go off for a few seconds...just long enough for me to not be real sure if I actually saw it flicker off for a second. I had someone pull codes for me and they got nothing. This one kinda baffles me. I am very new to the whole diesel world and hoping that someone can give me some insight and steer me in the right direction, I am at this point totally lost. Thanks in advance.
Try greasing the slip yoke. Remove the rear axle, clean and grease the yoke. The carrier bearing is usually shimmed of you have a lift over 2 inches.
Strange sound and feel can sometimes be a sticky slip yoke. There's a decent amount of flex and twist under load in the driveline and everything needs to move freely.
Mark,
I had a similar issue with my resurrected 02 F250. Among other things, I recently replaced my carrier bearing and the excessive shaking went away. The slight dragging sound also went away. Here's a pic of what the new carrier bearing looks like. I hope this helps.
Thanks for the help, I did a little bit of custom work on the mount for my carrier bearing to even it up with the drive shaft and the vibration has somewhat settled down. I am thinking that the remainder of my vibration is a balance issue with the shaft. I am going to take it in and get it balanced, I guess we shall see. Thanks again for the help.
