I have a 1994 F-250, 460 CI, EOD automatic Transmission,410:1 rearends. I have the strangest vibration in the truck when I have my slide in camper or any wieght in the back, but only at around 60-65 MPH, anything above or below that is fine. The strange thing is that I only get it when under power, as soon as I let off the gas it quits. It doesn't matter what gear its in, or going uphill or down. All the u-joints look good and tight and the carrier bearing appears to be in good shape. If anyone has any clue on what could be causing this I would appreciate the input. Thanks.
When is the last time you checked the splined slip joint behind your carrier bearing? Maybe it's dry of grease, causing minimal travel, and putting pressure on your carrier bearing forcing it forward.
You can tell whether it's the slip joint or not when you take it off - that is if it's full of muddy-looking crud that once was grease and dirt. Also, check your carrier bearing again. Looks are decieving. Once you have your driveshaft out, put your tranny in neutral and give the front shaft a good spinning. Check the slack (play) in the rubber housing and in the bearing itself.
Also - check the slack in your ring/pinion and the on the pinion shaft where the yoke slides on to see if there is wear on that bearing also.
And - check the play on the bearing of your tranny output shaft.
I pulled the drive shaft out to check that grease and you are right, looks are decieving. The carrier bearing fell out of the rubber housing , so I'm replacing that now. The grease wasn't bad in the slip joint, but for giggles I have cleaned it all out and will regrease it before I reinstall the drive shaft. I did check all the other bearings before I pulled the shaft and they all are nice and tight. Thanks for your help.
