new house

for those following we took possesion of our house this week. its a cape cod built in 1952. the other owners were so damn dirty!!!!! we had to clean before we could demo! i have also caught the old owner in a can of lies. no big deal but still...
in this small world we live in the nieghbor started talking about the original owner and my wifes grandmother and the original owner live next to each other in a retirement home!!! the old lady has told my grandmother in law all the dirt on the house and it seems all the work the owner i bought from said he did the fist owners did! they only lived in the house and did no up-keep. he told me his father-in law was a plumber so the pipes were good. during demo i descovered that lots of pipes and valves were weeping!
there is so so much paint build up ive decided to tear out all the trim and replace. it will be easier to refinish the wood floors too. we started stripping the int doors of all there paint and there oak! the demo of the entire kitchen is today if the health and strenth can take it!

yo,
Keep at it and it will be fine someday. It's like buying a used truck, huh? Without the work receipts, anyone's verbals are just that, verbals. BTW, son's Contour WAS in an accident prior to his purchase, although the dealership said (verbally) it wasn't in any type of accident with body/mech. damage; although we just found out that the dealership's body shp did repair accident damage to the rear incl. trunk and fender area. ding ding...

George,

Like Yeti said "pace yourself" Restoring a house can be both enjoyable and frustrating but in the end you'll be able to sit back and enjoy what you have done.

I look forward to hearing your progress reports George.

today i tore out the kitchen cabinets, floor (to the subfloor) and plaster cieling, the main bathroom cieling, tore out the interior basement steps, and finished tearing out the basesboard and window casings, and cleaned up. my wife and mother in law strippesd door frames to bare wood. im sore sore sore!!!
the kitchen and main bath were stippled but were the only 2 in the whole house. the kitchen cieling was damaged untder hestippling from the tub trap leaking. the bath was tore out to remove the stippling and to add a fan to the ceiling. the house is looking good even under demo conditions.

anyone know the best way to strip paint off radiator covers? im usiong stipper but its taking awhile and the vents semmm impossible. didnt know if they could be dipped or something to remove the paint?

I may have missed something here in reading the posts here but i thought that you are supposed to get any home inspected before you sigh a sales contract so that you can use the information to establish what you'll "Pay" for the property. fd

wow, this week was a huge demo week at the house. i went to work then to the house to work after work. i was too tired today so i came home after work to psend the friday with my wife.
the house now has no trim, any where, no int. basement steps, no kitchen (stripped down to bare studs and joists), no bath upstairs but a tile floor and bare walls and cielinds, no in terior doors, and no plumbing on the second floor. the copper pipes looked rough so were going for pvc. the drain was blocked solid from the sink to the tub! a lot of progress!!! ive had a price for the wood floors , the kitchen and now windows. all is giong as planned so far! im out of energy though. rest tonight and back at it sat morn!

Your really going to it on that house George! Just remember demolition usually goes quick, It's the rebuild that's slow.
