How Old Is Your.............

The house that I am currently renting and occupying is 10 years old and the only history that I know of it is that it was moved from the mobile home lot and parked here right between a 2 old couples. The neighborhood is quiet and one of my elderly neighbors owns a shotgun and wouldnt think twice about discharging it at anyone suspecious lurking around either one of our houses. One night, when I switched jobs and was wearing a diffrent uniform, I had to do some fast talking when I got home to get myself out of that situation.

my house was built in 1929 as a summer rental bungalow with outdoor cooking area and an outhouse. in 40, the rear porch was enclosed, making the cooking area a kitchen, and the outhouse an indoor pit. in 48 the outhouse was converted to plumbing. in 71 the kitchen was renovated, and a tub was installed in the bathroom to replace the wash basin that was in use, and a second story was put on with 2 bedrooms. in 85 i bought it from the 1940 owners son, and did a bare walls renovation.

Mine was built in 1906-07, and someone with the same last name as the original plat owner lived in it up until the late '80s or even early '90s. We bought it in '96, and it needs quite a bit of work yet (many of the projects have been started, at least ). I was making good progress, but then kids came along...
I have records on the house that go back to the mid to late 1800s.

Our house was built by the Army Corp of Engineering sometime around 1902; so I was told.
However records at city hall have it at 1907. City hall was destroyed in the '06 quake. Hmmm.
There used to be an old man who remembers these row of houses being built well before the '06 quake; when he was a kid.
He told me nothing out here but a few houses and sand dunes all the way to the beachs (wish it was still like that).
Put a new addition in the back 1/4 of the house (termites).
Has a wooden garage floor (sucks).
Was told the house was raised about 2 1/2' in the 40's or 50's.
Massive lot at 25' x 105' (wow, think I can land a A380 on it?).
Still has the old gas pipes (that use to light the gas lamps) in the attic.
The siding is all tight grain redwood (try to find that now adays).
Been in the family since 1966.
Forever on going projects.

My first house, where I grew up is now about 35 years old. I lived there for 24 years, and the family before us had it for 10 I guess. The next place I lived (skipping college dorms) was a Fraternity house, that was built in 1883 and sleeps 26. We don't know what it was before, but all of the houses in the neighborhood are the same style and architecture. I then moved across the street to a place that was similar, though we assume it wasn't built until the early 1900s. It was/is half apartment, and half half-way house. It seemed to me to be the worst place in the world to put a bunch of men who were trying to overcome drugs and alcohol...a college campus surrounded by fraternities and sororities is not typically a place one would go to get away from these things. I now live in a loft, newly renovated and the first resident of my room, in a building that used to be a brewery. Now I have hardwood floors and exposed brick. As far as I'm concerned, this one is brand new, though I assume that the building was constructed in the early to mid 1900s. Downstairs, it even still has the old rails and side door for loading old boxcars...it's pretty cool.

House born somewhere around 1868, Did a courthouse search for an Architectural course one time and came up with about the same info that was in the abstract (the bank had the abstract at the time). Around 1890 it was sold at a sheriff's auction...wife killed the husband... a few years ago we found a partial wedding ring in the garden!!!

Ya fooled me, Ben! I thought this thread was gonna be; 'How old is your...underwear', or something like that!
I mentioned on another thread that I live in a box. It's a '78 or thereabouts Stonehaven double-wide, all metal sides and roof, in fairly decent shape. We wound up selling the place a year and a half ago, and are renting it back from the buyer. He plans to build on the back part of the property and when he's ready to get this thing out of here he'll have to rip it up and scrap it as our county won't allow a metal sided mobile to be moved onto another piece of property.
My great-great-grandfather's house is about 3/4 of a mile away. It was built somewhere in the latter part of the 19th century, but unfortunately it's no longer in the family. -TD

I forgot to mention that I also used to live next door to Anton LeVay; founder of the church of satan.
Here's a link if you're interested http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_LaVey
Got to pet his lion-Togar. Still have all my fingers (suppose to be 9, right?)

Current house was custom built in 85-86 and I acted as general contractor. We had the foundation poured in the week between Christmas 85 and New years day 86. Most of the work was farmed out to subs, but I did the electrical rough in, alarm system, and phones / cable TV wiring, and all the painting, staining and varnish work on cabinets, doors and trim. Moved in May 1st 86 and paid it off May 1st 2001. Started the first remodel this spring and replaced all the flooring in the Kitchen with ceramic tile, and removed carpet in LR and replaced with Dupont Real Touch wood laminate. Just need to do the bedrooms now to complete the remake.
