The A/C in my 92 F150 hasn't been reliable since I've had it. I haven't used it much at all and if I have it wouldn't produce cool air. So what I want to do is replace the stock freon system with R134A or whatever is best and also replace the hoses in the engine compartment because I am sure there are leaks in some and they need replacing.
Anyone have advice on what I can do here? Is there a kit I can take advantage of to do all of this work?
On my 89 F250, the AC system was totaly open for a few years(the compresser was taped up on the lines). 3 months ago I finaly flushed out all the lines, condenser and evpaorator. I took the compresser off the truck and flushed it also as I did not know what was in it for oil.
I replaced the dryer and orifce tube and put on the R134 fittings(refit kit for R12 systems) and all new o-ring seals for the lines. Used 8 oz PAG oil with the UV dye leak finder in the compressor and 1 oz in condenser, 1 oz in dryer. 10 Oz PAG oil total in system.
Vacuum the system down for 2 to 3 hours and recharged. I now have ice cubes coming from the vents!
I never replaced any of my vehicle's R12 hoses unless it was bad, they all worked just fine with R134 in them. My 85 Plymouth Caravelle was converted 12 years ago to R134 and had no issues with the hoses leaking.
I got all the parts from Autozone near by me.
Just rembered this: Just be carefull on removing the O-tube it was stuck in the evaporator really tight and it broke apart when I tried to pull it out! For me I allready had the evap out of the truck and took me 2 hours to get it out without damage to the evaporator. Had to drill it out carefully and flush the chunks out.
I have used This in 3 or 4 differant vehicles that took R12, it works great. My bronco and my F250 both blow 40deg air out of the vents and it cost less than $50 The master kit comes with everything needed to charge your system
This is why I think is the #1 site with answers for all issues with our trucks !!!!!!
Eddiec1564 and vtjvt both have given two great ideas for A/C repair. My F150's r12 system was repaired years ago and still works great. But now I have two great options to choose from for a future repair, if needed.
I installed a kit from AMA on my non-factory ac 87'. I also did a dual contour e-fan mod(set to go on anytime AC button is pressed) and Added a 3G alternator.
Well, recently the weather has warmed up quite a bit here in sunny socal and my AC doesnt get as cool as I think it should (60s). On any other day when outside temps are below the upper 80's it blows very cold and the same in late afternoons or mornings.

Any idea what can be causing this?
I'm considering putting an aftermarket a/c in my non-a/c 1985 F-150. Do you have a link to AMA? And what is AMA?
I can't say if one kit is better than the other, but I will say if you are putting on a tetrofit kit make sure to thoroughly blow out any componants you leaves in the system. Remove the orifice tube. and blow out the evap before putting in a new orifice tube. Replace the Filter Drier/Dehydrator.

Check your low side pressure. You're going to want it around 55psi for 100+ degree heat.
Well its been about 6 months and my AC is working good with the Florida temps we have. Outside temps are around 90 to 98 and I can get about 38 to 46 from the vents!
I do have a small leak of which I cannot find even with the UV dye and sniffer. I think its the evaporator as I can't see it with the UV light.
Even so I put a can in about every two months. Last time I used the leak stop, we'll see if that finds and stops the slow leak.
Check the valve in the high side hose. On my '96 it's nothing more than a rubber ball. It leaked for about a day until the 'leak sealant' in my 'ultra synthetic' r134a worked around it.
