Oil Cooler Change Question

Hello All,
First post here, been lurking around for about 6 months.
Vehicle details, '04 F250 SD CC 4x4 6.0L PSD, 242,000+ miles, just bought it last fall, all stock as far as I know.
Question: I'm in the middle of doing an oil cooler change / EGR delete. I just pulled the oil cooler out and got a surprise. The valley (pocket) where the cooler sits was full of oil. I thought it drains out through the screen in the bottom. Caught me by surprise, what a mess!
Is this normal or not? If not, what would cause this and what do I do about it?

Thanks in advance

Normal...hope you have some diapers on hand...soak it up and make sure there isn't anything left in there but the screen and oil cooler when you put it back...there is a screen at the bottom...may have the screen in your oil cooler kit, however, if it didn't be EXTREMELY careful removing the old screen. Any damage to that screen or foreign debris getting past it could potentially lead to the mother of Migraines!! If you suspect any damage to the screen, replace it....if kit has a screen...replace it

It's totally normal to have oil there. As UofMgriz said, soak it all up an replace the screen at the bottom. That screen catches debris before it gets to ur HPOP.

Same happened to me when I did my oil cooler. I had to use a whole roll of blue shop towels to clean up the valley an soak up all the oil in the hole.

Hi knuss3807,

Welcome to FTE.

Watch this series of 7 videos from Senior Master Tech on youtube. This should be a playlist. You can jump through them but I think you'll want #3 to answer your question. He uses a handheld transfer pump to suck the oil out of the work area, and brake cleaner to clean up the area.

Thanks a lot for the quick replies. There ought to be some sort of warning in the instructions about this. What a mess! If I had known this was going to happen I could have been prepared, such a create a dam of rags or something, but no.... yank it off and make one he** of a mess. Oh well, live and learn, just hope I never have to do this again. Once is enough for me.

Again, thanks.....

I hope you did a good coolant system flush before you changed your oil cooler. An hope you are adding a coolant filter kit. If haven't done/doing those 2 things. Then it may not be the last oil cooler you ever change.

Already have done the flush, coolant filter kit will be installed as everything goes back together. I've learned a thing or two on here in the last 6 months.

Here is 1 idea^^^to get oil cleaned out

I used a Old shopVac I have for Maintenence on my vehicles Pull slow and suck the oil as it comes out keeps things clean.

Be very careful with rags or shop towels as the lint will collect onto the IPR Screen and take it out. I sucked mine with shopvac mainly and left it alone. I also used compressed air to help clean things.

Hopefulley the Valley of your Engine was Clean B4 you pulled that oil coooler the problem here is with the BIG GUSH of oil coming out will carrey any Junk/Dirt from Engine valley right into where the turbo drain Goes (as it was probably removed) and can get to IPR Screen that way to

Cant STRESS ENOUGH to keep things clean And I mean SPOTLESS

I'll probably use a turkey baster as that I don't have an old shop vac. Lots of good advise here. Thanks everyone

Better send momma to the shoe store while you're swiping the turkey baster out of the kitchen!

Fantastic little tool to have in your collection.

Multi-Use Transfer Pump

For some bizarre reason this is usually hanging on a shelf labeled as $5.99 in my local HF. Plus there's usually a 20% sale every few weeks it seems over there.
I grabbed a couple and have used them so many times for all sorts of things.
Plus it allows me to keep my turkey baster for what it was originally intended for ... removing diesel fuel from the upper filter bowl
