CRACKED TIMING GEAR COVER...

1999 PSD. 250,000 miles. Original everything including transmission. Yah, I changed the water pump and altornator and a couple other little things but for the most part it original.

I just had a mechanic reseal the exaust, HPOP and intake cuz it all leaked but durring reasembly he overtightend the HPOP cover that bolts to the top of the timing cover cracking the ear on the right side. Now it pukes oil like never before.

Bought a Chilton manual and it says that the engine has to come out.

Questions are... can I do the timing cover job without removing engine? Trans has over 250,000 miles on it. IF the engine comes out, should I just have trans rebuilt? $$$$ What mistakes to I need to avoid if indeed the engine has to come out?

I am very sad about this.

Oil pan has to be removed to unbolt oil pump suction tube from the back side of the cover

Time to pull the motor... Bet someone put the screened HPO gasket on it.

Your exactly right. He did put the screened one in. I went and got the correct one hoping the restriction of the screen was creating the leak past the seal but, alas the case is cracked.

PCIPSD, Why do you believe that the screened HPO gasket cracked it?

Because it doesn't fit your cover. Any time you try to put the wrong o-ring gasket in there and then tighten down the bolts, the cover gets cracked. It's happened so many times, and it's the most common reason for the front cover to crack.

Didn't have anything to do with over tightening. So who came up with the idea of changing to the screened gasket? If it was the mechanic's idea, he should be doing this work on his own dime. If it was your idea, well at least you've found FTE so you can avoid future mistakes like this.

What this guy said...

Now if your brave and have the time to experiment... I've always wanted to see if you could weld the crack up and make it work again...

Shove a few rags down the holes and see if you could weld it. Worse that could happen is you have to replace it... well your in that boat already!

Exactly! And if it WAS the mechanics fault, maybe you should refer him to this site!

Yea... Thanks for all the replies. I have been mechanic all my life. My next door neighbors kid, (the mechanic) just graduated UTI for diesel and he is very sharp for a 21 year old. He has been working for me for several years as he went through school doing big truck brakes, springs, tire and minor electrical repairs and stuff like that. He really loves the PSD and has been nagging me to clean up all the intake, exaust and HPOP leaks on my truck since he got out of school. Unfortunatly, he trusted the parts guy, didn't question the different gasket and is quite clear from me how much this is going to cost!!! He's a great kid, but I want to beat him like a red headded step child!

Really, It's my fault for not watching close enough... some good, he learned about not trusting the parts guy, what it's going to be like when he F's up someone elses vehicle, a 3/8 torque wrench is not good for low torque values and how to use a inch lb torque wrench and calculate 13 ft lbs divided by 12 equals 156 inch lbs. I know now the torque is not what cracked the case but the inch lb lesson is good.

What I leared, UTI doesn't teach real world mechanics. Funny, no school really teaches real world execpt the school of hard knocks!

I would be exploring the option mentioned above. Worth a try....the reservoir isn't on the high pressure side...

Exactly! Just weld it up and see. Worst that could happen is it has to be replaced.
