Turbo Power?

I am wondering how much hp I can pick up if I add non waste gated turbos to my IDI 7.3 engines?

I know that the factory rating for their turbo isn't much of an increase.

I have duel 7.3 in my boat and have been pieceing together turbo kits for the past few years. The company that put together my 7.3's for marine use make a tubo kit but it is wildly ixpensive and intercooled. It is Rated at 260 hp. I think their rating are a little optimistic. They rate the stock engine at 200 hp.

I run them at 2800 rpm all day long and they seem to like it. Good engine, nice to be able to buy parts at any parts store instead of having to special order marine engine parts.

The stock hp in trucks was either 165 or 185 HP. Adding a turbo is a night and day difference in trucks, not sure in a boat though. I'd imagine turbo lag is a little less of an issue in boats so non wastegated could work well.

I don't suppose there's any chance you got one of them 260 horse injection pumps lying around eh?

Increased fuel delivery, advanced timing with higher pressure injectors?

In the IDI truck engine world, adding a turbo can potentially increase power by 50%. In the marine world, most of us don't have that experience to be certain. We can scientifically deduce that you will have a power increase, though. With marine spec injection components, plus a turbo, 260HP is not out of the realm of possibilities for the 7.3IDI. If worse comes to worse, you at least get a cool turbo whistle!!!

Its the way they are rated as to why marine engines have more power than the trucks. The trucks are rated SAE net, which is all accesories, full intake system, and full exhaust system. Im sure the Marine engines are rated on a gross power output basis, which is essentially just the engine by itself on a dyno, no acc, no exhaust, no air filter, etc. Obviously the latter is going show more power on a dyno... So thats the rating they give the marine engines... Other than the Turbo Marine engines (Which are rumored to have some HO settings) Im willing to bet that there isnt too much different about the N/A marine engines over the truck engine.

One of the main differences in marine engine set up is that there is always a constant supply of cool water cooling the engine. So the engine systems are set up different and can be run stronger not having a hot cooling system.

7.3 Power

I agree, I don't think there is any difference between the marine and the truck engines. I think the company just buys the engine and converts it to marine use with different oil pan, etc.

If you want the HO injector pump check on Doug Russell .com. They have a nice on line IPB and prices for all the parts.

Be prepared to be shocked. Marine prices are crazy.

I did google it once. $2000 for a 260hp marine pump and only one of the two sites listing it even had one.

Too bad you're way up there, I have a line on two VT903M Cummins already set up for marine use with reduction gear on both of them. I watched one of them come out of the Cummins plastic box a little over a year ago.

I think the 903's would be too heavy.
