Hutch Mod Question

Ok I may have missed it when searching the Hutch Mod but I have to ask it, sorry if I missed it ..My parts hound is having trouble finding 5/16 SS or uncoated steel or aluminum. I looked at my sending unit and was wondering would it be ok to take the return line and bend it at the top of the sending unit so it shoots out parallel (inside the tank) to the top of the tank? Return fuel with air needs to get away from the pickup so why not put it at the top of the tank and eliminate the need for the 5/16 line to get it passed the pickup and float? I may be missing something so please tell me what it is. Thanks in advance Ray

I disconnected the "U" shaped hose from the mixing chamber and rotated away from the pickup. I did not add any length to the return other this original hose and have not had any problems in doing so. The air bubbles will rise and, with the OEM foot on the pump, are far enough away to not be drawn in, unless the tank is extremely low.

You may need to look at industrial vendors like Grainger or McMaster-Carr. Also another route to go is to look and see if you have a Parker Store in your area. They often have access to the tubing.

Grainger 5/16" Aluminum Tubing

Grainger 5/16" SS Tubing

McMaster-Carr Tubing (use the OD size filter on the Left)

The other thing you can do is use a 5/16"-3/8" reducing union. This will allow you to use a piece of 3/8" tube in lieu of the smaller harder to find 5/16"

I'm not sure I would use brass or copper. For several reasons. First, they are softer than the SS and more easily damaged, second, galvanic corrosion. Whenever two dissimilar metals are in contact with each other and moisture is present, the softer metal "sacrifices" to the harder metal and is gone in a short period of time. If you want to find 5/16 SS, try Aircraft Spruce and Specialties. They have all kinds of tubing for aircraft. Aircraft commonly use SS tubing for hydraulic lines for flight controls and brakes. You can find them on the internet, they are the Walmart of aircraft parts, so the prices are reasonable, relatively speaking.
