asking on behalf of the woman who picks up my kids from school and drops them off at afterschool care. She has 2005 explorer and says the brakes are making noise while she is rolling. noise stops when brake is applied. she thinks it is coming from the front. I said I would check it out. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've owned a few trucks but never messed with an explorer. thanks in advance
I think you're right in suggesting she get the brakes checked out, but I doubt the issue is a serious one. The noise is likely due to either a worn anti-rattle clip (that is allowing one or more of the brake pads to move around during normal driving, but it gets dampened once the brakes are applied) or a rust lip around the perimeter of the rotor that is making light contact with the pad when the brakes are not applied, but again dampened once the caliper forcefully applies the pad to the rotor.
Brakes are one of the many safety devices on a vehicle that not only help to keep the driver and passengers safe, but also everyone else on the road and nearby homes as well. If a person knows something isn't quite right with the brakes, it's a good idea to have them checked out to see if it's something that should be addressed.
