Ok, im so pissed right now at cadillac. I was going to see Jeff Beck on friday but my friend who was going to drive, had an incident with his car. You see i told him to get this fixed cause i saw this coming. anyway...
The car is a (i think) 1990 cadillac deville. The front driver side brakes went out apparently. I havent looked at them myself but he told me over the phone that it made a noise and then completely lost brakes in drivers side. Now, before this incident i heard the brakes make a strange noise. It wasnt a squeaking, i cant really describe it. It would accour every time the brakes were pressed. I have no clue what this could be if its not the caliper. However, i dont know if calipers make noise before they go bad. So what do you guys think. Help me out so maybe i can still make it to see Jeff Beck! This is his last tour with a singer, im gonna be sooooo pissed if i miss this!
The squealing noise was the pad wear indicator. That's your sign that it needs brakes, before it starts to wear into the rotor.
It needs pads on it right now. If it's been driven much at all metal on metal, it's going to need at least one rotor too.
The calipers are probably fine - and if you are suspecting the calipers, I would take it to someone who knows what they're doing. Brakes are not something you want to screw around with if you are clueless about them.
Im not clueless on brakes, ive replaced the entire brake system on my ford and on my firebird. Ive never done it on a caddy though, or on anti lock system. The pads never squealed, at least not from what i heard. Is it possible that they did squeal, and then just went completely?
OK - I assumed that because you were asking if calipers make noise.
Anything's possible - some cheap pads don't come with the wear indicators, and some people bend them out of the way when they are there.
The only two common noises that I would expect to hear are the wear indicators and the sound of metal on metal. Was it a grinding noise or something else?
No it wasnt a grinding either, thats the wierd part. Im really at a loss when it comes to describe the noise. It inst really that loud either. Earlier today he said it was makin the noise like usuall, then when he went to hit the brakes it made a loud (louder than usuall) noise and then the brakes completely went out on the drivers side.
Is it possible the backing plate got bent and is rubbing against the rotor? That's the only other thing I can think of without tearing the whole thing apart.
How did he know where the brakes went out? Did he pull the wheels off and look at it?
Yes, however i doubt its the hose. For one, the hose dosnt make noise, and two, i think he wouldve had total brake failure before he got home. He had to drive about 2-4 miles home, and he was in a residential area when it happened so he had to go from stop sign to stop sign. I guess he couldve made it home cause a good bit of that drive you could get by with minimal braking, but hed at least notice the brakes would be incredibly spongey. Wheres sherlock when you need him?
