My 95 Just rolled over 250k this past week on a trip across WA. I was pretty happy with it, but it came with an odd problem. I was going up Vantage (10 mile constant uphill) running about 2500 rpm at around 1050° EGT with no issue. Around the top of the hill the coolant temp gauge continued to climb until it hit the L of NORMAL, then sank back to about the M. Also, the oil pressure gauge went up to the A at the same time. Both stayed around the same levels since then. The coolant temp was normally around N before. 2 things I noticed are that it warms up considerably faster, and runs significantly smoother as well. My first thought is the thermostat, but does that sounds like too high of temp?
I would start by replacing the thermostat too, but the issue with the oil pressure gauge baffles me. The "oil pressure gauge" is really just a dummy light with a needle. It only has two positions, off and on (about middle of the range). The pressure sender is just a switch that makes a contact when oil pressure is present.
I am kinda half wondering if you don't have an issue with the gauge cluster. Did the engine temperature light come on when the coolant temp was up that high?
No. I was just driving it and the temp went all the way up to the white line before the red line, and still no temp light. I'll replace the thermostat and see where that gets me. I was curious about the gauge cluster as well, but its just those 2 gauges.
I had the same issues with my '96 around 205k, I wasn't even towing, just going 55 on a slight uphill. Temp gauge spiked, and the oil pressure gauge went all weird on me too. It ended up being just what Jim suggested, my Alt. went out soon after..
Checking the Alt. is a good idea.
The fuel gauge works. The tach and speedo work pretty well too. The other gauges are kind of just decoration since they don't accurately measure anything.
As mentioned, since they're basically nothing more than electronically controlled on / off readings, they can indicate a problem with the voltage (alternator) before it gives out and ruins your batteries.
250K issues. Thats a lot of issues. I think after the first thousand issues I'd be looking for a different truck, as it would probably be cheaper that way.
You sell that truck and markmy words you will look back and regret it! At least post it up here in the classifieds so that you give these guys a shot at it. We love us a PSD! And a crew cab (I think) to boot!
Well, I probably will, but here's the info anyways. I can't seem to post pics on my phone bit I'll happily email or text them to anyone interested.
This is a 1995 F350 4x4 with the 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel with the ZF5 manual transmission. Truck has 250xxxmiles. 6" lift with 38.5x14.5 Super Swamper TrXus MT on 18x12 Weld Racing wheels. ValAir clutch done at 220K miles. 4.10 gears front and rear. Custom made traction bar in the rear. Tony Wildman 6 position chip,6637 intake and 5 inch exhaust.
Needs new shocks, parking brake cable is broken and needs replaced. This is every bit of a 17 year old, quarter million mile truck. Engine still runs strong and gets me anywhere I want to go,but pleas do not expect a show truck.
If you're interested,I can be reached by email at john.tyler4@hotmail.com or at (509)939-0028. Prefer texts but calls are fine as well. If interested, make an offer. Asking $6500 but I'm motivated to sell. Tons more information, don't hesitate to ask!
Better post it HERE in the classifieds section. We're not supposed to post our stuff for sale on the open forum. Once you have done that, it is generally acceptable, although marginally against the rules to post in here that you have your truck for sale, and then refer to (or post a link to as long as no one complains) your ad in the classifieds.
