Turbo question

I have an 08 f250. When I'm driving I'll get a small hiss when the truck shifts gears for about a split second except for when it shifts into 5th gear it will do it for a second maybe two. It's not loud but I'm almost out of warranty and just want to make sure it's normal. The previous owner had a manifold gasket replaced and I had the crossover pipe seals replaced as well. It did it when I bought it and it still does it. Running completely stock.

I'll clarify the noise a little better. It's like a whoosh sound. Like pressure relief.

Does it do it regularly or just when you get on it? Mine started doing it after I changed out my downpipe from the restricted OEM crap to a full flow 4".

It does it when I step on it a little. Doesn't have to be floored it only happens when it shifts though. I should add that it's not very loud.

Well, I'm going to start with let's see if you have a stock downpipe? Unless someone else chimes in. From under the truck follow the exhaust up into the engine bay, the curved pipe coming down from the turbos, can you tell if it has a huge crimp about 6-8" up? Is there a clamp up about 8-10"?

I believe it's all stock. I just put a k&n replacement filter in.

That may be a possible culprit for you. If I recall, I have heard K&N's restrict air flow on the newer diesels. It may be gasping for air.

I'd check the downpipe when you get a chance just as elimination. The stock one has to be cut out, so if it was changed, it likely wasn't changed back.

It did it before the k&n. Does stock turbos make any sounds at all? By stock I mean that the truck is stock.

I didnt ever notice that sound before or through the addition of my mods. The DP was the only change to my rig before I noticed it. Hopefully someone else will chime in and give us direction. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

I'll check the down pipe when I get home from work in the morning. I appreciate the help. New to diesels and I'm just trying to get this sucker in tip top shape before the warranty runs out.

Ok, I've found a couple posts on it and I've concluded it's normal. It's Due to a build up of boost during acceleration and when the truck shifts, RPM's drop and that pressure has to be released. One site referred to it as "Turbo Bark" dating all the way back to 7.3's. Both stock and modified trucks are in question. I'm just not sure why I didn't ever notice it before.

On the 6.4, less intake restriction = less turbo "bark" or fluctuations, whatever you want to call it.

I know this because when my AFE intake boot disintegrated, the turbo was directly open to atmosphere, and it didn't make those sounds as it did with the stock air intake.
