Alright so this morning was an interesting set back, i drove my truck to school today, and it would not die, the ignition would loosly turn, disconnecting the battery did not kill it, only till i switched tanks to an empty one did it die. My mechanic said i would need a new steering column? and said i need to find a used one for it to be a cheaper price, then labor and etc.. for him to figure it out?
anyone have know of where one might be found for a somewhat cheap price?
Thanks for the help!
Don't think you need whole column. Either just the ignition portion(key), or the just the ignition switch under the dash(on top of column).
The key pushes on rod to push on igntion switch to start and turn off truck. One of the two aren't working properly. Neither is a big deal to fix, simple hand tools.
Your alternator was back feeding, thus disconnecting the battery would not shut truck off. Need to unplug alternator to kill it, then it won't feed the truck. At least that way you don't have to wait for it to run out of gas.
There're two different ignition actuators (the piece that connects the key cylinder to the actual ignition switch) depending on the year. 91 & older have the metal rod type, 92 & newer have a 2-piece plastic actuator. The plastic ones are a common problem, with the symptoms you describe.
