73 250 4x4 highboy 360 and NP435. I just had tranny rebuilt (not me...way beyond my skill set) and notice vibration at 50-56 mph. Got under truck and only thing I see is that u-joint is out of phase. I know from hooking up my tractor PTO this is a no-no, and this forum seems to support that, too. Question: How do I take shaft off at u-joint? I've never done this, but looks like 4 nuts holding u-shaped half rings. The shaft looks like two part, short smaller side near to tranny, so I assume I pull it down, pull the end off, rotate it 90 degrees, and slip back on, then re-attach after lining up tranny side. Right? If this is correct, do I need new washers or lock/split washers when I replace nuts? Last thing- how heavy is the shaft? I don't want to be surprised with a bonk in the head either...I'm lucky enough to do pretty much any work just lying on the ground under the truck. Thanks, y'all.
You are saying the cross heads don't line up ? If it ended up that way then someone had the slip yoke apart, I couldn't imagine any driveshaft builder would have welded it up that way. Yes take the 4 bolts off slide the slip yoke back and it comes right out, It's no heavy at all. Once you get it out if your lucky your slip yoke collar threads on and you can get it off and find the origional position it was in. Some slip yoke collars are pressed on if yours is then I'd just take it to a shop that builds shafts and have them fix it.
Driveshafts are lighter than they look. Becareful you dont over compensate for the weight and bump into a crossmember or something... They dent pretty easily.
As you guys mention...the yokes are not in the same plane, so I guess I'll give it a go at correcting this. It makes sense that that's the cause of the vibration. Like I said, I'm not too skilled, but I noticed that right away, since its the first thing I make sure not to overlook on my tractor pto. But those are quick connector shafts, which are self-explanatory how to remove in two seconds. Anyone got an answer about if I need lock washers when I put the nuts back on?
