88 F350-sourced engine, I recently put an oil pressure gauge on it and I'm not thrilled with the results. The original truck had an idiot gauge, so I didn't see the pressure before, but now it maxes out at 38psi. Hot at idle it'll drop as low as 12-15, but climbs back to 38 as the rpms increase. What should I see for pressure on this engine?
I am running Royal Purple, a Motorcraft filter, and measuring at the top port behind the intake.
sounds right. People get hung up too much on oil pressure.... especially on your lower power, low RPM diesel. Its more about volume than pressure in most of these applications.
Most people will freek out when they finaly put a real oil pressure gauge on a IDI. The international book says 40-70 at 3000 rpm is normal. I will be using a few tricks to increase my oil pressure on my engine because I am one of those people that thinks 10 lbs per 1000 rpm HOT is the minimum for most engines. And on one that you are pushing past its normal power output could use a little more for good bearing life. Just my 2 cents. I know IDI's have huge gear driven pumps that move alot of oil compared to most gassers but somtimes I just cant feel good about a 8-12 psi idle. It just don't seem right.
