Question unusual?

My son just bought a 82' f150 with I6 and 5 speed manual tranny. 2wd.
single cab, nothing fancy... but... what I thought was unusual was it has a short box with twin tanks.

does anybody know how many of these were made?? I thought you could only get twin tanks in long boxes.

The do list both tanks for that truck in the parts catalog so certainly was available. I certainly wouldn't be able to tell you how many were made in that configuation though

Short wide bed and dual tanks, not that unusual.
5 speed, on the other hand, wasn't offered in 82.......

re phrased perhaps better.....4speed with Over Drive. & it could have been swapped in at a later date, IDK? What year was the 5speed or 4speed with Over Drive offered 84?

I wasn't sure of the rarity ....just here in the midwest I just don't remember seeing this configuration....might have been more popular in other regions. This one apparently came from Alabama according to past sales receipt from a dealer that came with the title.

The first 5 speeds, I think, started showing up in 85. But I believe this was only in the Rangers. I think it was 88 that the ZF began use in the "F" series.

There was 4 speed overdrives used in the early 80's. The term "overdrive" does not indicate the number of gears. A 4 speed overdrive simply means 4th gear is below a 1:1 gear ratio...therefore overdriven. This means it's providing an increase in output revolutions compared to it's input, not a reduction.

thanks
to be honest I hadn't tried the shifter to see how many slots it has & it had a different shift **** with no pattern on it...just going by what the boy was saying...he thought he could feel 5 ....guess I'll have to give it try myself. the floor pan covers "look like" it had less than factory sealant on it and a bit different color.

Well curiosity got the better of me went and checked....definitely only 4 speed box, nothing above the reverse slot. as to whether it has 4th as the OD or just a straight up 4 spd box, remains to be seen...not ready for road test yet. gonna have to get the old gas out out of the tanks & tires are not what I would call trustworthy, not to mention marginal brakes.

Is this the toyo tranny that old rangers had issues with?

I think I got it figured out...he was counting reverse as 5th gear

look inside the drivers door and take a look at the certification label on the door jam. If you can post a good picture, I'll tell you exactly what's in there, assuming it hasn't been swapped out. Or at least tell me what it says for transmission code.

no, he drove enough to realize where reverse was. the gates are pretty sloppy

& sorry no door jamb sticker/tag....maybe it was a white lightning hauler .
can't read the Vin # either...the vin tag is offset in the opening and very rusty.

I cant find the title right now and the boy isn't home...he must of put it away somewhere....

charcoal canister

OK got the VIN# and ran it through the "decoder" it didn't yield much more info.
got the interior gutted pretty much, more for rodent removal and a few minor things under the hood.

The charcoal canister was disconnected
What units shared this Charcoal canister?? is it better to get a new one or good used one?

The charcoal canisters are part of the EVAP system (Evaporative Emissions) and was present on all but the heavy-duty trucks, something like over 8,500 GVWR.

It's on cars, too.

yes, they were present on a lot of different vehicles....but, were they ALL they same charcoal canister? with same amount capacity?

So I put a call to a local dealership, that told me that I'm looking for one from 80'-89' & that there is at least a dozen models that it should be comparable.
