After proudly fixing and replacing my gas tank on my 78 f150 putting gas in it (no leaks yay ) I go and try to start it it starts up but has that I haven't been started in awhile attitude, and dies so I pump it and start it again feather the gas then BOOM it backfires a puff of smoke and now refuses to start.
I have plenty of spark, fuel seems to be getting to the carburetor, A friend came over pulled the valve cover and said he didn't know what it was he pulled the valve cover to check timing of exhaust valve opening, the only advice he gave was that the ring material was getting old and went through the oil pickup and made its way up to the bottom of the distributor and broke off the sheer pin...hubby says it may of jumped a tooth in timing but the motor has no seeable timing marks so the timing light does not seem to help, when number 1 is TDC the rotor seems to be inline...it sort of acts like its not getting gas but have tested all the way to carbuerator and its getting gas to there.... any other ideas before I tear off the distributor? (my distributor shaft will not move at all so many of the local fellow backyard mechanics have advised I will need to break the distributor housing to get it out) after reading other posts I am going to look at the fusible link and test the coil...
Is the carb squirting gas in when ya pump the pedal? As for gettin the dizzy unstuck use half acetone and ATF. Put lots around the base and let it soak. Do this several times a day for a couple days and try to get it loose again.
ok am going to take off carb today and check it out the only question I have about the float being stuck is that when gas is poured into the throat it still doesn't fire where would the gas go? also thanks for the advice on the dizzy will start doing that....
Also, when replacing your gas tank, unwanted material may have enterd the gas tank, been sucked up through the lines, and dropped into the carborator. From experience, my brother was facing the same issue you are having, we discoverd that a handful of sand what sitting in his 1967 ford motorcraft carb. Probably in their from the guy who sold it to us. After clearing out the carb, we checked to see gas getting to it, but the float was stuck to low. Personally i would strip down the carb and make sure their aren't any obstructions that could be blocking the gas. Then, if you could possibly some how adjust the timing, you might find a solution. What artic said above sounds like a good idea for the dizzy as well.
well the newest development is that someone put diesel in our gas can luckily the motor is not seized and am draining the diesel out, now the issue seems to be spark the solenoid has power the coil has power and it got spark then nothing but everything has power....oh and the carb is functioning correctly..
drained the diesel out put super unlead in, traced down the spark problem to be coming from two wires coming off the coil replaced and cleaned it all now runs like a new truck...thanks for the advice
