Hey guys. I'm new to this forum and I just bought a 92 F 250 xlt supercab. I took apart the interior in an effort to get rid of an old alarm that was leaching off my battery, replace the radio, and generally clean everything up. I was thinking while I have everything apart is it possible to make a kill switch for the courtesy lights? Like be able to shut them off while leaving the doors open? I've tried to find a wiring diagram but I can't find one for a 92. Does anyone know if the diagram is the same a 90? I've looked over most diagrams and it seems things were changed electrically a little after 91. Basically I just want to know if anyone has ever made a kill switch for the courtesy lights or if it is even possible without interfering with anything important. Thanks
Once you find the wires which can be as simple as looking at the socket and tracing them by color and testing, all you have to do is stick a switch in line somewhere and mount it to your dash or wherever. With the switch open the circuit is broken and light is off. With it closed and your doors open the circuit is complete.
Thanks for getting to me so quick. Yeah, I kinda figured it was going to be easy as finding the hot lead and putting a switch in between but upon further investigation I think that the courtesy lights are feeding the radio, which in turn would make me loose the radio memory every time I hit the switch... I'm going to try and work at it a couple more days before I button up the dashboard. Just to be sure.... Im intent on making this work. haha Thanks again for your input
Oh... I believe my radio memory is done through my lighter along with the horn. Not sure if thats factory or not... But that is another option if the need arises.
cool thanks a lot ncranchero the only thing I don't get is why the radio memory is lost when I pull fuse 8? My plan from the beginning to put the switch right after the fuse. Maybe If I ditch the cigarette lighter and use that to power the radio????
ok that helps a lot But if i put the switch by the dome would it cut off the chime, courtesy doors, glove box, and the bed light too? because thats what i'm trying to do. I want it all to be controlled by the switch. And by the looks of the first diagram if i put it by the dome, won't it just affect that one lamp??? shouldn't it go before the intersection thats labeled s214 on the first map? ( sorry im a bit of a novice at auto electric.)
Oh, I see. I think most of us misunderstood you. I got the impression originally that you just wanted the dome light off. You are correct that the switch would have to be before that intersection if you want all that you listed to be controlled by the switch. It probably would be easiest to find another power source for the radio.
Ok great thanks guys I really appreciate everyones help. I hooked the radio up to the cigarette lighter feed and everythings good. when I got time I will try for the switch and grab the wire from behind the fusepanel. for now i can just pull the fuse and thats fine with me. Im definitely a happy camper. And thanks again guys. especially ncranchero. oh and by the way with the name I was fighting amateur MMA and I needed a nickname and thats what I came up with haha
