fuel leak

I have a fuel leak on my truck that looks like its right where the fuel filter cap screws on. Ran out of time too look at it so dont know if its just the gasket that is bad or the cap also. I had a problem once while changing the fuel filter of a big leak, even though the gasket was new. So wondering if anyone sells the bevel cut gasket without haveing to buy the fuel filter? Id like to get some spares. And if i need a replacement fuel filter cap can i get that at an auto parts store or is it a special dealer item?
Thanks Joe

Is this an aftermarket cap? There have a few that have had issues with them.

You can buy an OEM filter cap and oring, Clay has them Riffraff Diesel: Ford Fuel Bowl Cap

Good place to get the filter too RiffRaff Diesel: OEM Fuel Filter

cap

No its the original cap. But thinking back on it the last time i changed the filter i had a leak. I took it back out and used the old bevel o ring and it seemed to stop the leak. But maybe i over tightend the cap or damaged the o ring? I have been using the Racor filters and the last time i changed it i noticed the o ring was kind of twisted the way it was in the plastic. I will look at it tomorrow, got dark on me here. Hopefully it is just the oring.

I agree. I'll bet it the shut off valve. It happened to me while traveling out of town. I have to get the o-rings shipped in and I fixed it where I was staying while on vacation. I think there is a write-up somewhere here.

If I recall correctly, Ford doesn't sell just the o-rings, they want to sell you the entire shut off valve. I ended up buying the o-rings here, http://www.mcmaster.com/#

leak

I appreciate the help men. A couple of things. First off a local diesel place fixed the drain valve o ring leak for me 2 years ago. That was before i noticed on the site here about changing it myself. Now last night before it got dark i noticed it was seeping out at the fuel filter cover area. So i have to work on that first. Now maybe i have more then one leak but that is one for sure.
As i mentioned above the last time i changed the filter about 5k miles ago, i had trouble with it leaking there. It was a new racor filter and the bevel o ring was kind of twisted in the packaing. I ended up takeing it out and used the old one. I thought i had it solved but i guess it started to leak again. I think i overtighned the cap. Anyway will try to look at it here today. Funny but i never had a leak when changing the filter before. Makes me wonder if it was the twisted oring?
Thanks for all the input Joe

I could very well be that your o-ring is bad. Especially since you had to re-use the old one.

fuel leak

Well got a chance to look at the truck this am. Changed the fuel filter. I used my last Racor that i had bought awhile back. It appears to be working ok and not leaking so far. Have to take a test drive. But still have a couple of concerns. The bevel cut oring for the lid seems a bit loose to me. And it is also kind of wrapped funny in the plastic so it is twisted and not really round. I lubed it with some motor oil and put it in. Just seems a bit loose and too big? Wondering if any one else noticed this?
We are going for a drive later so will update. I hope this is all i had leaking. I have old fuel in valley on top of the engine. Any advice on how to clean this area?

Thanks Joe

I always use Simple Green in a squirt bottle. I don't even dilute it with water, just straight up concentrate. Spray it on, let it set for a few minutes then rinse with a garden hose. I don't blast the water, just the good ol' thumb-over-the-hose-end trick will do. You may want to cover the PS cap on the reservoir just to keep out the water.
