I sure could use an oil dipstick from a 429 or a 460 that goes through the timing chain cover. If anyone has one, I would be glad to pay a fair price. Or, if I have anything special someone else needs, I could trade too. My JY options are limited. Thanks.
I made one out of a heavy brass or bronze welding rod for the center sump in mine. I think I have one of what you want , if nothing else I could measure the one I,m using so you'll know how long to make it, but there are lots of them out there. I can look this weekend if someone close to you hasn't got one for you ..

I really appreciate the offer. I was actually just going to ask for a measurement and make one, but as luck would have it, I found mine. It might be hard to believe, but it was right where I left it 13 months ago when I first took the engine apart. I tried to be so careful about keeping up with things, but I have misplaced a few odds and ends. Again, thanks for the time to help out. I appreciate it.
Hey Maul i know you probably posted this info,I was wondering what cam you went with in your 460 build,I have my 460 at the machinist at this present time it came with a new performer Eldebrock cam street, not sure if I should stay with that for a pickem up truck, thanks dave
I picked this motor up on craigs list, looked over it for a day and a half and took it to my local machinist that i have known for along time.I know my dip enters from the rear,do you have to swap timing covers to enter from the front? Im not sure thanks any other pointers you know on a 460 that you could run by me would be not fall on deaf ears, thankyou
No, you don't have to change anything regarding your dipstick. The truck and van 460s came with the dipstick in the front coming out of the timing chain cover (I think). If your motor came out of a Lincoln, or other car, it would have the dipstick in the rear. Someone can chime in if I'm mistaken about that. I used a Lunati 61602 cam. I didn't want to go too radical, but it has a good usable power range. You can look it up and get an idea if it suits your application. Good luck to you.
Actually the cars had a front sump pan which is the only pan that will use a timing cover dipstick, the vans had a center type sump and 4wd had a rear sump, both of the latter went thru the side of the pan as far as I know and I know for a fact that a timing cover dipstick will not work in anything but a front sump pan.. I have a center sump in my 77 pickup 2wd and I used 3/8 tubing for a dipstick tube with a compression sleeve and the fitting that came with the steel line screwed in and tightened up nicely with no leaks..
I'm glad you found your dipstick, I remembered I had written the measurements down if you needed them..
Thanks for clearing that up. I hate to give bad information, that is why if I'm not perfectly sure, I ask for a confirmation. Right now, I am trying to find the motivation to go get a couple of radiator hoses so I can finish putting on the power steering pump and start the wiring on the engine compartment. It just seems to be one of those slow Sunday afternoons.
