Does the alternator on a 2003 escape need a heat sheild, or any kind of shield? I just had the alternator replaced and the guy said the sheild was missing? Does it need one or not? Sorry for this reply, I thought I was asking a question
Ford started putting a cooling duct on the alternator of v6 escapes in 2004. I have a 2003 and wrapped the cat in exhaust heat wrapping material. It didn't help much. The issue is the wiring. Oil eats right through the sheathing of the wiring in these trucks. I have pictures. In addition, the Alternator connector is suspect to corrosion internally.
My truck has been giving me fits for last 4 months, with battery light going on and off, to the point that all my gauges and all electrical go off for up to 10 seconds then , turn back on. Even steering was lost . I usually get 45 minutes of driving before the light goes on . At night worse. is it alternator time, I went to a napa parts place and the guy said he never heard of an alternator going early on an Escape
tried everything that has been posted here, but its getting worse.
Here they want $425 just for the part.
Am I at the line in the sand where I have no choice but change the part.
any help appreciated

Some auto parts store can test your battery and alternator in-vehicle. Not as good as pulling each and testing them but it may tell you what you need to know.

I would recommend taking a look at the charging system cables. All of them. Internal corrosion is what your issue sounds like. I recently went through this on my wife's Escape. I replaced every single wire BUT the one going to the charging screw on the alternator. I removed it and it damn near snapped in half from the internal corrosion. Get a multimeter and measure the resistance of those wires/cables from end to end. Copper has low resistance, so if you get high resistance; I would call that suspect.

I want to thank kjohnson1, you got it right, after 3 alternators and a whole day on the lift, we brought in a specialist who did exactly what you said and we found the bad wire, that was connecting to the alternator that was shorted and full of corrosion, right in front of the fan, re wired it and problem solved. cost me a bunch, but the relief of not seeing that battery light coming on all the time is worth it.
again , thank you
Ok, so my battery light blinks a few times per week for 3 weeks. I can't check what is failing because it is sooo random I cannot create the issue when testing. How long do you think before it goes full on and it is alternator time?
Have them check in front of the engine fan, the wires from the alternator, mine were corroded that would make the light come on. save your $$
one of the wires the middle one should be hot all the time, took me ages to find this. hope it helps

Same problem, only has been happening for a year
I went to Ford and they condemned the battery, replaced battery no change.
Went to local mechanic shop, they condemned alternator, replaced alternator (very costly because you have to pull the right front axle) no change.
Replaced the wiring harness from alternator, no more blinking light.
