Looking for help on weird problem, my 2002 Ford F-150 4x4 4.6L 5speed strangely has a time delay in starting now. A delay in TIME and not the usually chucking along waiting to start. Or simply I turn the key and a second or two passes before anything starts to happen and it fires right up. Was wondering a few months ago, if my clutch sensor was going out but then it cleared up once I put a new battery in it although at the same time the weather warmed also. Bad connection somewhere, bad ignition switch, or bad clutch position sensor – I could go in each of these directions. Thought maybe the security in the key was doing it too but both keys have the same problem. No codes also.
There could be a poor connection at contacts at some point in the circuit chain.
The circuit chain comes from a fuse through the ignition switch to the clutch switch, neutral switch and back to the start relay.
You have to test out each part with a voltmeter then test the part you find nearly open with the Ohm meter function but do not try to measure resistance with voltage present. The meter won't like that.
Be awhere that voltmeter testing could fool you under some conditions because the meter draws very little current. If the poor contact is good enough it will pass the voltage and fool you. It's under the larger current of the start relay that makes the fault appear.
The start relay could also be the issue with burnt internal contacts.
If you hear no inital click of the start relay, the chain is open at some point.
Best way to track this is to begin at the start relay and work backwards applying a battery along the chain to get the starter to turn over the motor.
When you get past the fault, it won't operate the starter.
Good luck.
