Well the search ended today. Momma picked out a shiny silver 06 Freestar. Surprisingly I don't hate it. It's got a 4.2l that is much stronger than I expected. It got 23mpg coming back from Russleville (hot rodding it a bit ) and it has more than enough room for me...... and the rest of the fam.
Now that sideways engine wedged in there...... not looking forward to working on that when the time comes.
Cool, Tosha looked at those here a while back.. but I somewhat talked her out of it.. not 100% though
We were looking most recently at the explorers too, I like the possibility of pulling the boat with it if needed. Her escape just has a class II hitch and it's pretty cheesy at that.

You do a performance evaluation on a Ford product? Surely not! The wife's "soccer mom" ride can/will get that kind of mileage when she slows down. Scott, I wonder what kind of custom tuning you can get for your Freestar through Jody or Matt?

I know exactly what you mean. The wife has an Odyssy with one of those transverse V6 engines. If you need to replace the water pump...you have to pull the motor mount on the front/right side of the engine (awesome!). The stupid thing has all kinds of room on the inside and the kids love the DVD player...complete with surround sound through the van's speakers. I think it's a gutless wonder when it comes to running down the road...but then I drive a PSD.

Wait a minute...you have a 7.3L that ain't exactly stock. And you think you need something else to pull the boat besides your truck. Don't let the 6.0L guys hear this...they might give you a load of crap about that comment.
We looked hard at Explorers too, but year for year the vans run half as much money and they have more interior room and better fuel economy.
Didn't really give towing much thought. I already have a truck that's kinda good at that stuff.
You're right about that, the vans seem to be good bang for the dollar. We're gonna have to get rolling on something here soon, the Escape is pushing 195k miles now.

It's just nice to have options. Back in the day when we camped pretty often, I'd let my wife pull the boat with the escape (a little boat) and I'd pull the camper with the 66. Pulling the camper or the pontoon with the Escape now isn't an option. Although Even if it could, lets just say it probably wouldnt so the point is probably mute.
What happened to the beautiful weather of last week? It was getting uncomfortable this afternoon.

You know, you can pull doubles in Arkansas. That's our plan...thus why I had to make sure the 5th wheel had a steel frame the full length of the trailer. Got a trailer for other toys that tips the scales at 3500#...so I'll still be under the GCWR for the truck & trailer(s)....though the 3.73's in the pumpkin might be a little tall when it comes time to hit the road. May have to buy a second 6.0L in a Tow Boss F350
I still want to see/read more about the 3.8L EcoBoost in a couple of years to see if they hold up as well as Ford claims. If so, an EcoBoost equipped Expedition could be a nice addiation to the fleet. Oh wait, Ford in all their wisdom doesn't see the value to a EB equipped Expedition.

Who's Bill? I was talking about Jody @ DP-Tuner or Matt at Gearheads. They write some stock engine (TTY bolt) safe tunes for the 6.0L nuts that are pretty nice.
Bill Cohren currently owns PHP. Power hungry Performance, but he is pretty much the guy that put diesel tuning on the map. He was the software writer for Superchips when they were the only game in town. Then he struck out on his own with a company called Diesel Power, which he sold to a guy named Jody and it became dp-tuner. Then he went and wrote Edge's programs for a couple years before getting back on his own with PHP.
I try to stay out of most of the chip threads since everyone has their own opinion, and since one of the sites premier sponsors is a guy I will never buy a chip from.... cuz to me Bill was, is, and forever will be the king of hexadecimal code.
