Hey there, i have a 95 f150 xl 4x4 and i (believe) i need a new transmission. because it shifts pretty hard basically on every gear, although it has gotten better since i bought it. but the reverse hasn't gotten any better, it still shifts very hard (after i drive it for a little while, in the morning it doesn't shift as hard) but it also hesitates when i put it in drive or reverse, it lags actually shifting and picking up the gear. well my question is that if i really do need a new tranny, do i need to also buy a torque converter along with it? and will ANY E40D transmission work from any year ford? or do i need to look for 1 that's close or even exact same year? any input on any of my problems or answers to my question will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mike
Fuel Injection Technical Library » How To Run a Self-Test Here is a link on how to check for trouble codes (should get 3 digit codes). I think you need to do that first.
I am assuming your truck is OBD1, if it is, you could also consider getting an Equus 3145 code reader for around $25.00 to make life easier.
To answer part of your question you will want to get an E40D from the same year or newer since in 95 Ford did major upgrades to the E40D. As far as the torque converter, I always change the torque converter when I s wap trannies but thats just me.
Other than that Lazy is right we'll need to know if there are any trouble codes since there are a range of things that can cause what you are seeing.
i ordered the Equus 3145 code reader from amazon because it was 25. from advanced it was 40. when i get the reader i will post the codes that pop up and go from there. Thanks!
ok i scanned it and a code did pop up. code 629-converter clutch solenoid circuit fault or lock-up solenoid circuit fault. anyone have info to help me get started? where the sensors are? how i can tell if thay'r bad? thanks

look on the passengers side of the trans.about halfway back, and halfway up (bit more) you'll see a small heat shield held on by a couple 10? mm bolts -actually,8mm i guess.anyway, remove that and then carefully unclip this plug.
it's common to see bare wires here.if you see that, splice in a new replacement plug using heat shrink connectors.if it all looks good, just clean it up and then apply dialectic grease and plug it back in.often this will cure your current code.
unhook your positive battery cable for a few mins to clear the pcm from codes/safety mode.
drive the truck.it will now shift perfect.if the light starts to flash along with firm shifts, then the trans still has a fault and it could actually be your solenoid pack needs to be replaced.it can take several miles to go back into limp mode,so don't get your hopes up too soon.but like 9 times out of 10 just repairing/cleaning this plug is all that's required.
good luck.
