Hey guys I got a 04 V10 6.8L excursion with now all of a sudden the clutch won't engage in the compressor. Is there a shut off switch I don't know about or do I have to replace the whole compressor
Let me get your opinions
Thanks
Tony
Tony, there's a repair/mod on here somewhere that involves reducing the gap of the clutch. It seems that from wear, the gap gets wider, so there's a small washer in there that you can replace with a thinner one to reduce the gap down to near factory spec. Then it should engage/better. Some have had very good luck with it, but I personally haven't. It got a little better, but it didn't fix it completely.
The mod is the same, as far as I know, for gas and diesel. The 6.8 compressor/clutch is in the lower front corner of the engine. I believe the sticker showing the belt pattern should show which one it is of the group.
Seems like that write up was for diesel do you think the 6.8's would have the same problem because the compressor is @ the bottom and looks diff. From diesel well it appears diff. From looking underneath the car but I am going to try it out tho
Doubt u have the same problem I had but worth looking at, my belt came apart and took out the wire connector to the compressor. It sits right over the belt. Just something to look at.
The compressor is the same on all SuperDutys. It's an FS-10. Different number of belt grooves on the pulley, is all. Though the clutch plate might be a slightly different design, with rubber isolators, it adjusts exactly the same.
I found that the clutch is much easier to do on the V-8s and V10s if the degas bottle is removed, and that means draining some coolant first.
But it's all do-able, and shouldn't take much more than a couple of hours.
How many miles are on this rig? The air gap usually doesn't begin to be a problem until about 100,000.
