So, I talked to customer support over at Summit and they are sending me a $25 gift certificate for the shoddy Walker pipe! Pretty cool. I also have $20 in Summit bucks from my previous order that I can use on top of that.
No worries on the thermostat. All that'll do is prevent the engine from getting up to and maintaining operating temperature. This would effect performance on the road, gas mileage, etc, but not your idle like that. I'd definitely recommend putting in a thermostat though.
I was reading through here and I noticed this segment. Maybe my truck is unique but I actually saw a small gain in overall performance with my truck with no drawbacks: my gas mileage improved 3-5mpg & engine runs alot cooler and smoother now. Once I do a full tune-up it will better.
Plus if memory serves me correct, I dont thinkI have anything routed underneath the bottom of the log intake. Maybe it was blocked off but the intake & exhaust manifold is both stock...
Okay, so, I got the manifold back from the machine shop. They did a phenomenal job on the resurfacing, but I feel like I got screwed out of the cleaning.
I thought it was understood that 'cleaning' meant the entire thing, inside and out, there are chunks of carbon where it connects to the exhaust manifold. I assumed a machine shop has equipment to clean this. But they only cleaned the outside. Am I wrong here? I mean, that's like $20 for 15 min of work. The outside wasn't that dirty in the first place.
Either way, I'm not gonna call them back. I really want to get my truck back up and running, so I'll clean it myself tomorrow (on second thought I wont because a tropical storm is expected to slam into Jax) or something. I'll also stop by Ace and pick up the studs, washers and locktite.
I picked up the thermostat housing today as well. I also want to work on degreasing the block a little more, don't often get the chance to do it with the manifolds out of the way.
Sorry for no updates lately. You can think Beryl for that. After the storm hit, it rained every day since.
I went to ACE today. They had 1 type of stud and they were 'automotive grade.' To further my problems they only had 3 of them. I asked about this. They went through 3 people before they sent someone to me. He suggested I buy bolts and have a friend help me...
I didn't go to Home Depot or Lowes, I went to the bar. I'll take two asap. This project is going on too long.
Sorry to hear they didn't have the studs you were looking for. But nice price on the manifold planing! That's great.
As for the loop on the manifold, that's VERY common. You'll need to take a grinder to it and remove it.
Before you install them, fit them together with the intake manifold and see where they bind. You may have to remove other material to get them to fit. Nothing a grinder can't fix. But, if you don't, you can snap mounting ears off the intake, and that'd really suck.
Good luck on it, you'll love it when it's all done!
Okay, they're tacked on! They fit really nice, I was starting to get anxious but they look great and fit like a glove. The grinding wasn't so bad, and that was literally the first time I've used one.
I never did fix the y pipe. I'm not sure I have the tools to do it. How did you fix it?
Awesome! Yeah, it's generally not too difficult. Just a matter of doing it.
To be honest, mine were not nearly as bad as some pictures people have posted up, so I never got around to doing it. It's one thing I'd like to go back and fix sometime though.
I don't know what tool people use. Something for a drill. I'd imagine someone at a place like Lowes or Home Depot could point you towards the right tool.
I may end up ignoring that issue as well, at least for the time being. I only need 4 bolts to connect the pipe to the manifold and that's exciting. Speaking of which, what size bolts should I get? I fished around my 'spare bolt can' but couldn't find a matching thread.
I'm not going to bolt up the y pipe yet cause I think it would be wise for me to grind out that inlet. However I do want to make sure everything fits. I have the pipe in place, ready to be bolted.
My question is, how do I thread in those studs? There is a long section and a short one. Does the long end go into the manifold?
