My 460 in a 1988 F250 duallie will get me through the summer. With the price of fuel, can I step down to a 351 and still fit my C-6. I usually pull a 24' enclosed trailer with 3200lbs of car and equipment. I don't want the diesel route. I will assume that the 460 can't be made to suck less fuel. I don't need to keep the EFI. Any help?
What kind of driving do you do, stop and go or highway? If it's highway you will see best milage gains with an OD transmission, a 351 will not get better milage towing that load and it will require a different transmission as well since it's a small block and the 460 is a big block so the bolt patterns don't match. As for an alternate trans your easiest swap would be a big block ZF manual, the AOD is a small block trans and even if it did boltup would need a lot of beefing to handle the load, and the only other auto with OD is the computer controlled E4OD which would require a computer and wiring harness swap along with the trans.
Getting rid of the EFI will only increase fuel consumption.Making the 460 more efficient will help increase MPG.Thats alot of weight to pull. There's much info on this site to help a 460 get better mileage but the basics such as free flowing exhaust, maybe even headers, unrestricted air intake and a properly set up fuel system are a good place to start. How many miles on the 460 and is it stock? How does it run and what kind of mileage does it get now?
lol its kinda silly to want pullin power and mileage without goin diesel honestly i have a healthy 460 but im seriously considering savin up for a cummapart you should too. a 351 is a gd motor but i always say smaller is not better especially for towing you'll just get worse mileage
