I have a 54 F100 that I am restoring. I am going to put in a 302 With a C 4 behind it. What type of motor mounts will work the best? Seems there are several different kinds in different magazines. Is there a diagram showing the distance from the front of the frame to the mount location or some kind of schematic so I get it right? Also I have the front end lowered approximately 2.5 inches using original front end except for Posies Super slide mono springs.
Also, I want to change the steering column to a tilt wheel and smaller diameter steering wheel using the original steering box. What do I need to do this? I'm not a newbie at this but never redid a 54 F100 and want it right. Back to the 302---do I need a front sump or a rear sump on the oil pan? Looking forward to your answers. Thanks for your help.
Welcome to FTE! A lot of questions in one post, but I'll answer one and let others do the rest. The original steering box is designed to use the bigger steering wheel, to give you more leverage over the manual steering. To use a smaller wheel with a manual box will make it really hard to steer. An alternative to this is to use the Toyota steering box as talked about in this link: Toyota Steering Box Swap For 1948-1960 Trucks .: Articles With a 302, a power steering pump can easily be mounted and used. The Toyota box also allows a new style column to be adapted, since the original column is integral to the original box and can't be separated other than cutting and welding , which if not done right, can be dangerous.
When I got my truck it had a front sump pan and stock front suspension. 351 cleveland. The pan was badly dented up and damaged from bumping on the front suspension. They also had to raise the height of the motor very high which put the transmission (c6) cocked at a funny angle.
Im not quite sure with stock front end. But I think you will need a rear sump and then you will need to relocate the crossmember, under the front of the cab, for the transmission to clear properly. I am going to fab a new crossmember all together for my c6.
Another note, you may also look into boxing the front section of the frame. 302 may bend the frame rails. (like the Cleveland did to mine).
Hope that helps some!
