my timing is off, i think.
i'm trying to diagnose a no-start, and i was told that if the rotor was pointing to #1 at tdc the timing should be close enough to start. turned to 0 deg and it was way off, rotated 360 deg, and it's only slightly off (between 1 and 3)
so i'm pretty sure it's off.
here are my 2 big questions:
first, is there a way to tell TDC other than the finger in the sparkplug hole method? i have big hands and by the time i get a finger to the spark plug hole i cant tell the pain from the contortion from pressure from compression
second, my chilton say for base timing to refer to the sticker under the hood, but i can't find any stickers other than the belt routing sticker. does anyone have the proper base timing for this truck?
Use a plastic straw instead of your finger to feel the top of the piston. You have to use your finger to feel the air being pushed out of the plug hole though, or you might catch it 180 degrees out.
Once you find TDC, install the distributor so that the rotor points to the #1 terminal. If it still won't catch, try cranking it while you turn the distributor back and forth by hand until it catches.
i did realise i made a stupid assumption, though.
on the crank pulley, i have a little hole and a little pointer. i was assuping the hole was for timing, but i realized it may be the pointer. which is it?
If by "hole" you mean the square notch, no, that isn't it. You need to line up with the timing marks on the crank pulley. You should be at 10 deg with the rotor pointing at the #1 piston. On the timing indicator attached to the block, you'll line up 10 deg at the far right side of the indicator. Base timing is 10 deg BTDC.
