Walking by the truck today, I hear the blower motor through the cowel vent. I jumped inside, found out the turn signals work, as well as the blower motor, without the key on. Also, the ABS outside clicks once in a while. I pulled the plug on the ignition switch, thinking that may be the problem, no dice. When I pull the # 24 fuse (10A 4WD ABS/turn signal, etc) and reinsert it, the signal relay clicks behind the radio. When that fuse is out, the heater fan still runs, all without the key on-or in. Any thoughts? 2000 F350 7.3
That is usually caused by a leaking windshield and water has gotten to the GEM (Generic Electronic Module) that is mounted to the back of the under dash fuse and relay panel. Do a search for GEM and you will find some good info.
Go to thisLINK and scroll down and there are instructions for removing the GEM.
If it is wet some have had good luck burying it in rice to dry it out.
wonder if the ABS could be bad, but that does not explain the blower motor. Any takers?
Gonna take the fuse box out and have a look see. Going for a ride and check for any other symtoms (speed sensor, etc.) Not being a electrical whiz, I am lost.
Here is the power distribution diagram for the affected circuits from a 1999 wiring diagram:
The feed at the top of the diagram (labeled F) comes from the ignition switch, so unplugging it was a good first step. Since that didn't work, a short circuit in the wiring harness or one of the other devices that is common to this circuit could be the problem.
Try unplugging fuses 22 through 24 one at a time and see if removing any one corrects the problem. If it does, then look at the protected device for the source. For example, if removing fuse 23 corrects the problem, then check the flasher relay or its associated wiring for a short circuit.
EDIT- Forgot to mention, the connection marked X on the above diagram feeds the blower motor relay coil.
took fuseblock and GEM mod out. While loosening the 2 10mm bolt holding the connectors to the fuse block, I figured I would check for problem again. with connectors loose, problem went away. So, I then disconnected the batteries and finished removing, What I found was a few terminals on the fuse block were slightly oxidized, yet nothing was wet. Pulled GEM off of fuse block and opened, everything looked good. I cleaned up the fuse block terminals, put it all back together, looked for water remnants up inside dash (none), and , knock on wood, everything is good. Possibly from past dampness problems on a 12 year old truck? No known water leaks. Oxidation did not look like it was from recent water. Fingers crossed..........
