My trucks temp gauge has been fluctuating alot lately.... Not entirely overheating... This weekend i noticed some "boil over" I guess you would call it. The overflow container was completely full and fluid was on the ground. When i say full I mean more fluid was in it than what I originally put in it.
I looked under the hood and heard a slight hissing sound.. No fluid was spraying out. I believe there is a crack in my radiator. Could a clogged/cracked radiator cause the temp gauge to fluctuate and the "boil over"?
I'm still researching it, but any help you can give would be great.. Oh and on a side note... I have replaced the thermostat because I thought that was sticking.
What kind of driving were you doing when this occurred? City or highway?
If city, or towing highway, could be a bad fan clutch, alot of people seem to overlook that thing, and it's one of the most important!
But look over your radiator well.
My '89's original rad, had a hairline crack down the driver side plastic tank, would leak only when it pressured up. No actual leak, just a vapor leak. Never got over operating temp though.
It was highway driving.. i was heading out camping. Stopped right before getting back into the woods and came out to a puddle under the front of the truck... I'm wondering if my radiator has a hairline crack like yours did.. I did hear a hissing sound but could not find any actual leaks. I've got a buddy that can pressure test my system for me. I think that would be a good start... I'm just hoping this will be an easy fix.
Cooling system maintenance is always overlooked. Over maintaining it is cheap insurance. Did the truck act the same before you switched thermostats? Sounds to me like it is over heating. First pressure test the system and fix any leaks. Then for peace of mind, flush the system, change the temp sensor, change the thermostat, and refill with new coolant. Use only distilled water when mixing new coolant.
