New rad....somewhat erratic temp guage

Last week I noticed a small puddle of coolant beneath the truck and my reserve tank empty. Brought it in and the rad had a hole in it. I noticed this in time and the truck never overheated. With the new rad I'm noticing fluctuations in the temp guage that I'd not noticed before. On the "NORMAL" writing on the guage, the needle will cycle from the left part of the "O" to the right part of the "M" back and forth. To my knowledge it did not do so before the replacement, but I might be wrong. Could this be a thermostat issue? Any ideas?

Thanks
Itch

Usually after making a change in the cooling system and then having the temperature gauge do that--it means that there is air in the cooling system. Have you turned on the heater after changing the radiator?? Also check the coolant level in the radiator after the engine has cooled. Is there still coolant in the overflow bottle??

I've had to refill the overflow bottle the day after the repair, as it was almost empty. I attributed this to possible air in the system. Since then the level in the overflow bottle is constant. Being in Canada, the heater is constantly on this time of year. Is it possible that there is still air in the system somewhere? If so, how do I get it out?

When I do mine I let the truck run, with rad cap off, (watch your fingers) ,squeeze the upper radiator hose over and over kinda pumping and the fluid drops add more over and over till it stops going way down. Though you might just be able to stand there let the truck run for 20 mins and do the same as it cycles.
