1/2 ton diesels are not very useful.

As you have also noticed that most people don't buy the diesel option on smaller vehicles as well.

lets take Mercedes for example.

The ML350 comes in Diesel and Gas.

You cannot even tell the Diesel engine is a diesel, it has lots of horse power, trendous pick up, but nobody wants it. It's just as quiet as the gas motor.
But why does no body really want it? (by nobody I'm not saying no one at all)

Because diesel STILL has a bad wrap.

Nobody wants to mess with stinky fuel.

When people think of diesels, they think of all these *******s on the road who blow smoke all over the place acting like idiots while driving. (this is one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of stacks, its like saying "hey look at my small *****" while blowing smoke everywhere)

Diesel stations are not as accessible.

There is no benifit to having a diesel over a gas in a lot of the applications.
It's just more "simple" to buy a gas vehicle.

As well, look at diesel prices.

Charging more for a product that costs less.

So when my Uncil gets a pep car as GM/Ford/Dodge employees would know it, they suggest that he get a gas motor, because it is more likely to sell before a diesel all day of the week.

Now, I talked to a guy with an ML320 today with the diesel, and he loves it.
But he didn't look to upity and I don't think he'd drown in a rain storm if he didn't have an umbrella either.

Now lets think about ford and the eco boost engine.

Twin turbo 350 horse power gas.

Why would I want to buy a diesel if I bought a 1/2 ton that was for tooling around town?
These things are crazy fast!

What would a 1/2 ton or small truck with a diesel be of use for?
For anyone who is a diesel enthusiast.
Guys like us around here who LOVE diesels.
Yeah, we love the smell, we love the fuel, we love the sim.... wait, they are not simple anymore, but you get the point.

It's just not a "modern man" thing.

But then, the idiots are too stupid to go out and buy a VW TDI and get 50-60 MPG with the stickshift either.
They keep buying over priced US made cars.. I mean US assembled cars that break down a lot and get 20mpg on pump gas.

It's just programing over the years.
Everyone thinks diesels are dirty and polluting.

So, when you drive around town with loud *** pipes blowing smoke everywhere.
It's not "cool".
You actually look like a ******** to 99% of the people out there.

Kids ask me all the time if my truck blows black smoke. I tell them, "no, my tuning doesn't suck."

That really confuses them.

Sorry to kinda drop my thoughts on rolling coal on you all.

There is a time and place for it.
And I like it.

But I don't like ignorance with it.
it's like going out in public and waving a gun around acting dumb.

Then wondering why people hate guns.

I disagree with your TDI statement. I have three of them, two 98's and a 06. One in AZ, SD and MI. I drive the heck out of them and at 80mph I'll get 40--42mpg. I got 50 once, site seeing in the Rocky Mountains driving 40 to 50 mph. If you want 50-60mpg then get a Pruis, add some more batteries and reprogram the computer to leave the engine out of the equation until higher speeds.

My feelings on the smell is gas makes me barf more now then diesel. Not just the exhaust but the smell of gas. Maybe I'm just used to diesel anymore.

I think a 1500 diesel to pull a boat or a small camper would be great. There is a place in the market for one, IMHO.

I think you're all missing the point of a little diesel in a 1/2 ton vehicle. I don't think the majority of those owners are going to be looking for uber-performance or 1 Ton hauling/towing capability. If they can make that thing get 30+ MPG I think people will buy them for the sake of fuel economy and longevity. Around here there are enough guys making their own equivalent of that truck (using mainly the Cummins 4BT) that to be able to buy one new and have all the creature comforts and the fuel economy would be a grand slam in my opinion. I guess time will tell. I think it would make a great daily driver or fleet vehicle. Not to mention that I think it would make a great base for someone looking for a service truck as long as they don't need huge load capacity. There are a lot of contractors out there running 1/2 ton trucks with service caps on them. To those guys I think the added expense of the engine on the front end of the purchase would pay for itself pretty quickly in the form of fuel savings and the longevity of the drivetrain. I guess that second part may be a toss up. Come to think about it all of this is speculation, but I would love to see Ford bring the little Powerstroke to the US for sale in the F150. I still want one in a Ranger...

Well Talyn , A lot of people do not want an oil burner , as you stated . I work on many , Cat , Int . Cummins , Detroit , Merc. VW . Isuzu . I see the cost involved in repairs and maint . I have one customer that just sold his fleet of isuzu npr's and bought f150's . He says he will save money in upkeep . Not much profit in lawn care . As far as imports go , I own a 98 kia . 38 mpg loaded on highway . I even pull a trailer with it . Imports kicked our buts in the 70's and 80's . We made a comeback in the 90's , somewhat . Now US made is as much foreign as American . Just my 2 cents .

I dont know y they havent for years had a diesel offering.imagine all the late 90's expeditions that WOULD have held their value had they been affordable enough to drive...there was talk in 98-99 about a small v6 powerstroke in f-150 coming...never happened.seems like a 30+ mpg lightter more manuverable truck would sell to even the soccermoms. imagine a diesel bronco...yea...that would have rocked the domestic(what ever that really means to my beloved ford) just have not had the vision needed to overcome real ingenuity since the 64 mustang.or

go back...the shoe box ford in the late 40's revolutinized the market Ford was a dead company up until then..then the falcon in 60 and mustang in 64 and then the tragedy of the pinto...then mustang II and the "dark ages" of the 70's & 80's... im going to stop my disertation now... I still think i need a 7.3 excursion or psd/4b cummins swapped bronco.or maybe the diesel 4wd scout a friend thinks I need..heck I WANT IT ALL!!!!

One of the members over on the binder planet forum actually took a wrecked obs and put a 7.3l and zf5 in his scout 800. It was a sweet build.

I saw a Powerstroke V6 in a little cabover truck not too long ago. I'm thinking 4.4L, and I think it said LCF on the side of it... Off to google.

Edit: It could have been a 4.5L. Something in that neighborhood. I had a picture of the badges, but I deleted it.

I know right...I was at the end of my "smart phone" contract..things are ultra tight financially so we did a major downgrade to a cheap pay as you go deal. Therefore my internet is much less accesable. AND we have a major project at the shop that was just in the mock up stage last week that has to be DONE by 13 of march for a big trade show debut in Indy. ON top of all that my girls have been under the weather...AND I had to resurect my dads jeep..NOW that I have the Dodge back I have to fix what is broken after dad drove it so I can tear back into my front axle for front inner axle seals.

All of this when I was hoping to be midway through assembling my Model T back together. I have not touched it yet.

SCOUT! Yea.wish I could talk my wife into that one.I should have bought it when I was on my Bronco hunt last month.OH well.I dont need ant more projects.

Glenn IM happy you like your tdis. I still have a bad taste from the one we had. BAD DEAL!
