so i recently have finished my first carburetor rebuild but it still doesnt work right. i dont know whats wrong with it but maybe you can help me out. when i first start it up it idles really high then slowly idles down and dies. if i manage to keep it running and put it in drive it dies. is it maybe time for a new one or do i just need to change something? thanks for any help
if its the 2 barrel. i rebuilt mine and did exaclty as you said. the float was hitting the top gasket, i simply had to pull the top back off and open the hole in the gasket more. i think i cut out most of what is over the fuel bowl.
it was causing the float to hang up and not let any more fuel into the bowl but would start back up.
i just adjusted the float on my holley 600 4 barrel today too but the truck just ran like total crap, it didnt act like how your saying.
if you have the 2 barrel pop your top cover off there should be a small 5/6 sided hole over the bowl, thats what youll need to cut out bigger. and dont worry it wont leak just be careful with the gasket
if you still have the old top gasket to compare to youll see what im talking about. but yes just enlarge it so that the float cannot be limited by it it any way. that should fix you up man!
so it runs a little bit better now i can get it in drive now but if i slow down/ stop it will die. also when i drove it down the road i let off the gas and it died but i didnt notice until i realized i had no power steering.
might have a vacuum leak if it dies.... does it run good other than it dies at a stop? and the carb rebuild is all you did right...not pull the intake or something else also? jw
if it has a brake booster try plugging off that hose from the back of the carb or intake and see if it does it still? if it 'fixes it' maybe that vacuum check valve is blown. thats all i can think of right now
Let's start with the obvious here since I don't see any mention of it. Did you set the idle screw? If it runs fine other than dying at idle just turn the idle screw until it does idle. Based on the 1st post it sounds like it runs when the choke is on, then when the choke is done the idle is too low and it dies.
